What you'll do

This is one of the oldest trails to the plateau of Rax mountain. Already the founder of psychoanalysis, Sigmund Freud, used to climb the Rax mountain on this trail.

We start our hike on an easy forest road with the Rax massif in front of us. Soon, the forest road turns into a narrow, shady and steep trail. In the beginning, the trail is mostly in the forest, but after gaining some height, we will enjoy stunning views into the valley.

The higher we climb, the more impressive the panoramas will be. The last part of the trail is very rocky. After approx. 2,5 hours we reach the plateau of the Rax mountain. We take a well-deserved break at the mountain hut, enjoying fantastic views into the valleys, to the neighbouring Schneeberg peak and the vast plateau with its alpine flora. Guess what - the most prominent visitor of the hut was Sigmund Freud! Just below the mountain hut there is an alpine garden, showing rare alpine flowers and plants.

Duration: approx. 4 hours 15 minutes
Elevation gain/loss: 861 m
Lowest point: 779 m
Highest point: 1.640 m
Distance: approx. 9 km

IMPORTANT: please only book this tour if you are an experienced mountain hiker and are familiar with alpine trails. You must have very good physical fitness level. For experienced hikers it will not be difficult, for others quite a challenge.
MEETING POINT is easily reachable by subway U3, 10 min from city centre.

Hi, I'm Karin. I'm the founder of Das Leben Spüren - Embrace Life, an outdoor activity organiser, offering guided hiking tours and excursions for travellers, expats and locals. Already before that, I voluntarily organised similar trips for a global expat network. I am a professional hiking guide and have a master in tourism & leisure management. I love meeting people from all over the world as much as I love nature. Combining both and showing travellers the natural beauties of my home country is what I enjoy most. Besides my passion for nature and exploring new trails, I love yoga, photography, gardening, fashion and delicious food. On my tours, I invite participants to be present at the moment by finding joy and contentment in the sheer beauty of nature, rather than boring them with facts and figures.

Where you'll be

We will start the hike close to the historical towns of Payerbach and Reichenau. During the fin de siècle, the aristocrats increasingly settled in the region and built many beautiful mansions. It was also the time of the popular summer resort, attracting many intellectuals and artists. The villages still have this ancient historical charm and are surrounded by the fantastic panoramas of Rax and Schneeberg mountains.
