What you'll do

Once you arrive at our place, we will talk to you a little about achaars, how it is a part of our local culture and the process of making it. We will let you taste some achaars to help you decide on which kinds of achaar you would like to try making and then collect the ingredients that are required to make them.
Achaars are a spicy condiment, usually made of vegetables either as a preserved, fermented pickle or fresh, raw, tomato-based 'chutney' with some herbs. Almost every meal is accompanied with an achaar that is a home-based recipe passed down in the family. We will show you how to make three kinds of different 'achaar's and take you through every step slowly at your pace, whilst you try your hands on a portion yourself too. You are free to take home your bit of portion to relish later.
This achaar making session is a great way to get a peek into the local flavours of our Gorkhali food and culture.

Hi! I run an AirBnB homestay where my guests have often praised about our achaars. This made me want to share the art of achaar making with others too.
I'm a Gorkhali Nepali belonging to the Newar community, known for making great achaars. Achaar is a spicy condiment that accompanies our main meals, which involves a simple making process yet unique in itself. I can make achaars out of anything, or even with just three basic ingredients if there's nothing available around the kitchen. I use ingredients and recipes that have been passed down to me from four generations.

I will show you how a simple thing as this can be an art, a health necessity that is tasteful and soulful. I welcome you to take an insight into our socio-cultural life via this experience.

More tips

Some achaars will be ready to be eaten/tasted immediately, while others will be ready only after they are left to sit for a few months; you can taste how they would be like with us. For some achaars the veggies need to be dried well, so it depends on the vegetable season at the time of the activity.

What to bring

you may bring a container to take back what you may have made.
