What you'll do

Our meeting will be at Chumisa Primary School the oldest and biggest school in my community. Chumisa means to give light in the Xhosa language, it is fitting that our meeting be educational not only because its easy to locate but also because this will be a learning experience for all of us. Before we make our to my house.

The Xhosa tribal family is the second biggest tribal group found in South Africa, many great leaders have come out of this loving nation which is why upon arrival I will give you (guest) a short Xhosa history lessons, greeting and historical background of the dishes that we will be preparing together.

Our dishes for the day will be Rooster bread (with an old family recipe) and homemade Ginger beer as starter and snack while we make our main Umfino a healthy generational meal made from wild spinach, cabbage mixed with mealie meal (maze).

And lastly as sweet and warm ending we taste a surprise desert that I will only mention closer to the date of the cooking experience. I don't want anybody feeling excluded so for each and every dish that we make I will prep the ingredients beforehand and together we will prepare the meals. And since these are cultural meals we will short culture presentation on other Xhosa meals and our heritage.

At the end I will provide everyone with the recipe so they can try it at home and share with friends and family.

Have been cooking for more than 30 years, I have a deep love for food, people and culture. And as South African Xhosa native my culture influences my outlook on food, life and society. A mother of 3, two girls and one boy food in my family is our love language, our kitchen is not only our classroom but a space where we bond, make memories and create new experiments (recipes).

Our love for food is even shared with some of the local in our community through Zamathole Kitchen (named after our Clan name), a family own catering business where we serve traditionally inspired cousins. As a cook I believe that food is just a simple gift that you get to share with the world. And through my kitchen I get to share my gift with everyone that steps through my door and sits at our table.

Where you'll be

As one of Khayelitsha`s oldest primary Schools, Chumisa Primary is located in the heart of Site B, a suburb of Khayelitsha with diverse architectural.

My home is both a residential house were I live with my kids but also my base for business where I run my catering from. This is where I do my magic in the kitchen.

YOU HAVE TO DO THIS EXPERIENCE!!! Definitely a once in a lifetime opportunity. Auntie Zama and her family are amazing, and the dish that we made in her home was very delicious and easy to make. This was my first Airbnb Experience ever (as well as my first time in South Africa and my first solo trip). Auntie Zama made it the hallmark of my trip. You would be remiss not to sign up for this experience!

We loved cooking with Ntombi! We were welcomed into her home and were really glad to meet people like her who work hard to provide for their family. Our cooking turned out to be delicious and we ate our fill - including the desert she had prepared for us. We felt safe the entire time we were there. We definitely recommend meeting Ntombi and cooking with her!

Our Uber driver easily found the spot and we were welcomed with hugs and ginger beer. Ntombi and her daughter were friendly, kind, and the food was so good! I can't wait to share her recipes when I get back home. A safe, relaxing experience and a Must Do for your trip to SA.

I highly recommend this experience to see a different side of Cape Town, make delicious food, and hear some great stories. Ntombi is so welcoming and knowledgeable, we really enjoyed learning from her and spending an afternoon with her, and can’t wait to try cooking the recipes back home.
