What you'll do

We will meet an hour and a quarter before sunrise and will walk in to the best location to catch the sun rising above Coquet Island. This may mean a short drive from our initial meeting place and will mean walking on the dunes and beach, so you will need a torch. Once in position, we will take some "blue hour" long exposure photos, looking at the rapidly changing luminosity and temperature of the light. Using the hyperfocal distance and advanced compositional techniques. The sun will rise over Coquet Island and shooting 'Contre jour' - into the light - poses exposure challenges for which we will be prepared. As the sun breaks the horizon, there is usually another surprise local phenomenon which will add interest to your photos.

Apart from the torch, you will need:
A camera, preferably a DSLR or mirrorless Compact System Camera (CSC) but an advanced compact bridge camera will work.
A wide angle lens and/or a telephoto, depending upon the types of photos you want to take. I don't recommend changing lenses on the beach.
A tripod. (I have one to lend on a first come first served basis. Please let me know if you don't have one.)
An empty memory card and full batteries.
Suitable outdoor clothing and stout shoes that may get wet with sea water.

Optional: A mat to sit on.

I am a local professional photographer with well over 30 years experience. I run photography courses, workshops and led photoshoots, as well as photographing weddings, portraits and events. You can also find my photography articles in three newspapers. I get a lot of folk on holiday in Northumberland coming to me for on-locations portraits and a lot more wanting to be led on their photographic adventures. I get a real kick out of showing you how best to capture that sunrise, the puffins, this landscape, those castles and the fabulous waterfalls.
My clients have been of all ages, the youngest was eight and the oldest so far was 87.
This photoshoot will not only be about shooting from the best location but also you will learn about the perfect lens and camera settings to get your sunrise picture.

Where you'll be

Part of the workshop will include showing you how to plan future sunrise shoots. The location of where we set up out cameras varies from day to day as the sunrise changes position. We will be on the beach, or on the dunes overlooking the sea depending upon the tidal state, which also changes every day. We hope for a clear sky to capture the sun rising, but even if it is overcast or it's foggy we can still get some great shots.
