What you'll do

We meet by the Church gates opposite the Blind Piper bar in the charming village of Caherdaniel. We gather, introduce ourselves and I give a short talk on openair megalithic carvings (rock art), how similar carvings are found the world over from Hawaii to Namibia to Brazil to California. The megalith we are visiting is in a meadow overlooking the village. We proceed there by foot, it is only a short distance away form the village - our way lit by torches. Arriving at the rock, I tell you about how I discovered it in March 2014 and why it is lucky to have survived and discuss why it is so important. We turn off all the torches and when I light up the panel, we stay silent for a few minutes as the carvings are revealed. A lively discussion follows where we exchange ideas about how this site may have been used and what the carvings signify. A little known and intriguing part of our ancient past, I am keen to raise awareness of this class of monument.

An archaeologist, I am a prehistorian researching prehistoric rock carvings at University College Cork. Here in Kerry, we have 5000 year old carvings still in their original location in open pasture, where our ancestors got our their stone tools and made this beautiful form of communication. These enigmatic carvings are largely curvilinear in form and similar to those found in passage tombs such as Newgrange. I have discovered and reported over 100 examples of this rare monument type and found many other monuments in Ireland, including passage tomb art, a pre-historic copper mine, standing stones and a stone circle. Rock art is magical seen by night. I am sure this is one of the ways it was used, for large gatherings by fire light. It is my pleasure to bring people to see this fascinating and little known aspect of our heritage
