What you'll do

Guests will be greeted at the front gate of the fenced property by myself and possibly a resident cat. After introductions and the offer of coffee or tea to sip as we walk, I will give some background on how the gardens went from asphalt parking lot to what they are now. We will stroll through the various parts of the landscape which showcases perennials (herbaceous and woody), annuals, vegetables and fruits. Throughout this time I will explain how short seasons, long daylight hours, cool temperatures, many microclimates, and special varieties all are factored into how we garden here in the north. Guests are welcome to ask questions at any point. Depending on the time during the season, guests may have the chance to sample fresh-out-of-the garden Alaskan carrots, known for their incredible sweetness, or to taste tart blue honey berries.

Next we will spend time in a new part of the garden where there is a recently completed glass greenhouse and more perennial beds that I am in the process of developing. Here I will explain some of the unique aspects of greenhouse production in our northern climate.

My motivation for inviting guests into my garden is to inspire them with the magic of gardening here in the far north and to share this universal language. And during their visit I hope to share as well some of my own experiences generated by a life time spent in Alaska.

I am a lifelong Alaskan. I grew up on the Alaska Highway where my parents operated a roadhouse and bush flying service. My degrees are in biology and zoology However, the first time I walked into a local greenhouse-nursery, I knew that was where I was meant to be. I have built, operated and eventually sold two greenhouse-nursery businesses over the past forty years. The first was a destination location about twenty five miles east of Fairbanks that included greenhouses, a cafe, and a general store. The second, The Plant Kingdom Greenhouse, is three miles from Fairbanks. I operated this for twenty years, built a reputation for the most beautiful hanging baskets in town and for extensive perennial display gardens. I lecture and teach classes about gardening frequently. I am currently writing a book on northern perennial gardening.

The property overlooks the city and has an expansive view of the Alaska Range and Denali to the south and west. Moose, sandhill cranes, fox, songbirds, and small mammals are also commonly seen in or near the gardens. If time and interest permits, the display gardens of The Plant Kingdom Greenhouse are only a three minute walk away.
