What you'll do
First we will orient you in the studio. You will learn about basic metal forming, the technique of dry sifting glass or vitreous enamel and how to fire the glass onto the metal substrate. These new skills will allow you to fabricate your own pair of enameled earrings which we will complete together before the end of the workshop. Snacks and drinks will be provided during the workshop.

I am a metal smith and enamel artist, and the owner of Monty's Follies. I have worked in Asheville's River Arts District for the last eight years making jewelry and enameled objects. I have a graduate degree in the art and used to work as a restorer of Asian art. These days I enjoy exploring creating jewelry, and pushing the limits of my media in new and unusual directions.
Where you'll be
You will visit my spacious private studio in the Phil Mechanic Building in Asheville's River Arts District.

My girlfriend and I were visiting Asheville for Valentine's Day weekend and I was in search of a unique date idea to surprise her with. We are both EXTREMELY happy that I found Jame's earring-making workshop, it turned out even better than I could've imagined and my girlfriend loved it. Such a unique experience and so cool that she actually will get use out of the earrings. The workshop itself was far more exciting than I (a typical dude uninterested in jewelry) had anticipated: involving soldering, power drills, and hammering. It was also a creative process, allowing us to design the shapes, orientation, and color of the earrings. James did an excellent job explaining each step in the process and offered to help us as much or as little as we felt comfortable with. James himself is a fun and engaging instructor, focused on the project but also conversational. My girlfriend and I were both super impressed with the experience and are already suggesting it to friends!

Our experience wth James was wonderful and exactly as described. It was a really great way to actively participate in Asheville’s arts without needing to have prior knowledge or experience. In addition, we madea product that we could take with us as a reminder of our great trip.

James is a very experienced and knowledgeable artist and instructor. His studio was amazing and was the perfect environment for inspiration and creativity. My wife and I enjoyed the personal, hands-on learning experience with James and were so proud of what we created together! We highly recommend this experience and look forward to taking another class during our next visit. Neil and Michelle
