What you'll do

Beautiful bikes, beautiful rides, and all our neighborhood secrets. On our tours we'll smell the roses, taste the doughnuts, ride across the bridges, and along the rivers; it's the best way to experience the diversity of culture, art, poetry, nature, parks and neighborhoods in Portland.

We believe it's all about the bike ride! Our approach is to spend more time riding, but lots of time stopping at gardens, art collectives, sculptures and beaches. We start in the inner Eastside neighborhoods, where we will fit you for an easy-to-ride bike and helmet, ready for a sweet 9-11 mile ride.

You'll visit a total of five of the city's quadrants, ride over two bridges, and along the Willamette River. We'll visit a number of almost-secret beaches, read poetry written in the sidewalks and rocks, see public art of every shape, color and texture. And have you tried some of the city's best doughnuts? (And no, we don't mean Voodoo.)

Portland is not just a city of seamless bicycle infrastructure and friendly relations between cyclists and motorists, but also a city of poets. Literally and figuratively, our bike ride is a poem--a series of poems--to our city. We'll read poetry written on murals, in sidewalks, and carved in rocks. There is, too, the whirling poetry of wheels on pavement, the sweet suspension of effort that is cycling on the quiet streets and pathways in this place we love.

I'm a published writer of essays and professional storyteller, and each of the narratives around which our tours are based was a collaboration between us, writers and route designers, as a movable narrative, what we call place-based storytelling.

When we create a ride, it is one we as story creators develop out of the places we know intimately and love so well we are bursting to share them; and also includes elements that together make up not just the story of Portland, but also the beauty of biking in what one guest called "the most pleasant urban cycling experience" there is.

Where you'll be

We start at our shop at Around Portland Tours, 833 SE Main #120, and fit you for the bicycle & helmet perfect for you.

We head into a pretty residential neighborhood, to our favorite rose garden, into an art-heavy industrial district, across the sexy Tilikum Bridge, and onto Portland's waterfront. From there, it's a visit to Old Town/Chinatown, and along the river, before we head over another bridge back to our shop.

Wow just wow. I was lucky enough to go alone and it was a very comfortable and fun experience. I felt completely safe and I don’t normally feel safe navigating a bike in cities. The guide was able to take me to so many cool sights that I wouldn’t have been able to see or find alone. His knowledge of the Portland’s history and quirks was super interesting and he had a very nice, laid back personality, good sense of humor. I think this is by far the best tour I’ve taken and my favorite experience thus far in Portland. Thank you, thank you, thank you! One of a kind!

Great way to familiarize yourself with Portland, even if you don’t bike, the level of difficulty is low and a great way to get around the city. Maddie was very friendly and knew her stuff. Next time I go to Portland I will definitely do this tour again and bring my friends

More tips

Portland mornings are cool -- bring layers! We have raingear to borrow; or (Sept - June) bring your favorite rainjacket. We wear everyday clothes to ride our bikes, but it's easier in comfortable footwear, with no long skirts or wide legged pants. Minimal bike experience is ok; none, is not.
