I have a degree in Geological Sciences, a photographer for over 30 years and for several years I have studied and researched aspects related to the landscape, history and prehistory in the territory of the Murgia of Matera. Two years ago I founded a company with which I promote the territory of Matera and Basilicata on the web through a tourist portal. Through the website www.matera.cloud we offer information on the city of Matera, on economic activities and on what it is possible to do and see. With the experience gained over the years, after hundreds of excursions and 400 gigabytes of photos taken, I think I can offer a unique, diversified and compelling experience in a majestic landscape, discovering fascinating and hidden places, rich in natural and historical sites and archaeological where to take memorable photos.

Where you'll be

Matera is immersed in an incredibly beautiful and wild area rich in history and breathtaking landscapes, the Historical and Natural Archaeological Park of the Rock Churches of Matera, a hundred meters deep and 20km long canyon in which a stream flows. During the experience we will visit unknown natural areas of the park, different from those usually visited by tourists. Places impossible to reach without an expert guide.

A "you won't find this anywhere else" kind of experience. Giambattista is native to the region and knows it like the back of his hand. The trail we did is completely unknown to tourists and even most other locals. While most trails around the city of Matera are frequented by a fair amount of tourists, we didn't see anyone for the entire duration of the hike. What's more is that Giambattista, a passionate geologist, has knowledge, insights and stories you won't get anywhere else. He's been exploring this area for years and years, looking for traces of prehistoric civilizations, for which the signs are everywhere. You'll see amazing caves, monoliths and rocks - in the most peculiar places and the mysterious stories they tell. All within a majestic landscape, a sort of Pugliese Grand Canyon with views that will leave you breathless. Highly recommended.

Giambattista and his friend were extremely knowledgeable about Matera and the Murgia National Park. We visited incredible caves dating back to the Neolithic, Bronze and Iron Age. We also visited one of the famous rock churches used in the Middle Ages in the area. Where they took us was completely off the beaten path. We did not run into one other tourist - huge plus in our books. The wild nature of the park is beautiful and the history is fascinating. Unfortunately, there was a language barrier as we didn't speak much Italian. I think if you could understand the language more, you would be able to get so much more out of the experience. We loved it but only wished we could have conversed more easily as it was clear Giambattista and his friend had so many stories to share! But we still had a great time and learnt so much. Giambattista took photos on the hike and sent them to us afterwards and surprised us with coffee at one of our stops!

Incredible! From the breathtaking views to the hosts remarkable knowledge and insight (and the completely unexpected coffee and treats that Giambattista pulled out of his backpack), this tour was absolutely phenomenal. See a side of Matera that few get to experience. It's worth every penny and then some. One of the best local tours we have ever taken.

Do not miss this experience. Long before the Sassi, Paleolithic humans, going back as far as the Lower Paleolithic period (800,000 years ago or so), lived in this area. Giambattista and Michelangelo will show you early human homes, art, sculptures and carvings created so long ago it boggles the mind. They have great knowledge and a rare passion about the subject matter. We did see Rock Churches too, which were amazing, but the early human archeology was stellar. You will not believe something like this exists in Italy.

Grazie Giambattista !
