What you'll do

Build your own Solarcan camera with its creator in the remarkable and unique Solarcan workshop. Bathed in intense red light it is an experience to be in the workshop alone, but here you will be supervised and learn how to make a bonafide camera which you’ll take home afterwards.

What is a Solarcan? It’s an extreme time exposure camera capable of capturing the path of the Sun over days, weeks, months or years. Sold throughout the world to photographers, scientists and artists it’s a wonderful tool to help the user make sense of the world. This experience is your chance to make your very own and learn about science, astronomy, light and design.

What will the experience entail? You will greet Sam at the Solarcan HQ to take part in a workshop that will take no longer than an hour. A maximum of six people will go through the several stages of making their own Solarcan with plenty of opportunities for chatting and questions. When your Solarcan is built we’ll head outside and discuss tips and tricks on where best to place it!

Solarcan is an extreme time exposure camera and as such you’ll become a member of the community who will want to share your results long after you’ve left!

A fun and mind stimulating activity for all ages. No previous skills or knowledge required. Every participant will take home a Solarcan.

Hi, I’m Sam Cornwell, inventor and owner of Scotland’s favourite camera company, Solarcan!

After moving to Hawick in the Scottish Borders I studied at Edinburgh University, attaining the prestigious ESALA award for my work on materials and making, adding to my bachelor degrees and Royal Photographic Society awards.

In 2013 my photograph of Venus transiting the Sun saw me awarded the first Sir Patrick Moore award for astrophotography and propelled my journey onwards, leading to art & astronomy outreach, a role as art director for an observatory, astrophotography classes and on location workshops.

When I’m not in the workshop building Solarcan cameras you can find me teaching photography at university level, working as an archivist for a castle trust or looking after my two energetic children.

Sam, thank you very much for a fantastic experience. All the family really enjoyed making the solarcan with you. We learned so much and our cameras are fitted - south facing! My children 10 and 11 years had an inspirational time. You explained everything so well. Thank you!

What an amazing and informative evening! I have had some experience with Solarcans before going on this experience but I totally seem to know everything now! Thanks for a great evening and I now have a very “special” can that I made all by myself - now where to put it to work it’s magic - thanks Sam 👍👍

This was a very informative and interesting experience which was thoroughly enjoyed by our family group of 6, from teenage upwards. Sam was a great communicator, enthusiastic, encouraging and passionate about his brainchild. We each came away with our own personally made Solarcan which we are looking forward to putting into action. We wholeheartedly recommend this activity.
