What you'll do

The Old Man of Storr. One of Scotland’s most iconic landmarks; a natural wonder formed during the last Ice Age, a sight of special scientific interest and an area of landslip unequalled anywhere. Meeting at the car park, which overlooks the Sound of Rasaay we begin our day by taking a less frequented southern approach. Avoiding the crowds our route wends it’s way through an awe inspiring maze of rocks, fallen blocks, hummocks and pinnacles to the base of the Old Man. There, in the secret sanctuary, we pause to rest and enjoy the views. Fortified with hot tea and Scottish shortbread we carry on beyond Needle Rock to a col, then up past deeply cut gullies to the Storr's summit plateau. A fantastic viewpoint, where few people go.
From there it is clear just how large the Storr is and we have a choice of 3 equally remarkable decent routes. We end our adventure once again by the car park and with our backs to the Storr we can see over the Isle of Rasaay to the mountains of Torridon far away on the mainland.

I have lived on Skye for over 25 years and spent 15 of those years as a mountain guide, leading individuals and small groups into the Cuillins, to be blown away by the beauty of Skye and the Hebrides. This desire for high places has led me all over the world from the Scottish mountains and English Lakes, to the Alps and Dolomites, Morocco, Spain and the Indian Himalaya.
During my years on Skye I have accumulated an expert local knowledge of the coastline, moorlands and mountains, and am particularly interested in flora and geology. I really love to show off an island where every walk presents new discoveries. Where even on known paths, raking light will reveal the hidden depths of a wet gully. Where an unexpected flush of wild flowers lifts the spirit and bird song changes with the seasons.
Come out for a walk, you’ll be amazed too!

A hike with Ray is a real treat. He really knows the land, knows the history, definitely has the Highlands bug and shares that easily. Super friendly, engaging and fun. Just loved it. Awesome flapjacks.... 😁

Fantastic morning with Ray who was insightful, anecdotal and knowledgeable of local history and wildlife. We felt absolutely safe in Ray’s expert hands. Loved how we navigated the back roads away from all the crowds. Personal touch of flapjacks made by his wife which were divine.

My hike up The Old Man of Storr with Ray was fantastic and I can’t recommend him enough. Even though I was his only booking he agreed to take me up and I feel really lucky to have enjoyed a personal 1-1 experience. Even though I’m not super experienced Ray made me feel safe, comfortable and used his expertise to set my pace, and taking breaks for water etc. His knowledge and experience is obvious and he has an infectious enthusiasm for the outdoors which can’t help but rub off on you. We had the (unknown) side of the hill to ourselves which was fab and allowed us to go at our own pace and had time for lots of great photos. Only when you get to the top and see the well trodden path do you realise what a great experience Ray offers. The views are spectacular as is the homemade shortbread, flapjack and hot lemon and ginger. My trip with Ray really made my weekend and I can’t wait to do another one with him next time I’m on Skye. Don’t hesitate to do this hike, it’s fantastic.

We really enjoyed a wonderful hike with Ray around the Old Man of Storr area via a route where we were entirely alone until we reached the Old Man himself. Scenery is amazing and we were lucky to have good weather and visibility albeit a bit windy in places. Ray is a very personable guide and very knowledgeable on the nature and geology of Skye. Homemade flapjacks were most welcome at the summit ! Thanks again Ray.

Rays knowledge of the landscape was obvious as well and his passion for climbing/walking and Skye, including plenty of personal stories from over the years. Going up the lesser known route meant we saw no other people until we reached the peak and could savour the views and landscape. Ray was considerate of our need to go slow and the homecooked flapjacks and shortbread were delicious. We are not hiill walkers and are so glad and proud we made it to the top!

Wow - this was a great day out. Ray clearly knows Skye extremely well and took me and my two daughters on a wonderful hike round the back of Old Man of Storr - the views were incredible and we are away from the crowds for most of the walk too. We certainly wouldn’t have found our way without him and he had us venturing further than we probably would have gone on our own. He’s great company too. Highly recommended. We’ll be booking him again when we return.
