What you'll do

Our kayaking area is located 1,5 km east of the Paquera ferry landing. Upon arriving at Bahia Rica beach you will be greeted by us. The tour preparation area is under the palm trees where we will go through the basics of the tour and give safety instructions. After entering the kayaks we will give additional instructions of how to use the kayaks if anyone does not have any kayak experience.

Once on the water you will kayak over to a small beach on the island across from us for a little rest and maybe even a little sunset dip in the warm water. At this point, we will serve up water, biscuits and fresh fruit to enjoy as the sun sets and the ever-changing colors in the sky do their thing.

Back in the kayaks the attention now turns to the low hanging moon. On clear nights, it is incredibly peaceful to be out on the water with just the moonlight to guide you. However on cloudy nights, it may be possible to see and experience the bioluminescence.

Having arrived back at Bahia Rica, there is freshwater available for washing off sand or saltwater. Towels and toilet facilities are also available should they be needed.
This sunset full moon tour is only done in the week before the full moon and until two days after the full moon every month of the year. The rest of the month we do the bioluminescent kayak tour

We are a team as hosts, sharing the different tasks to give you a good experience. Thomas is a marine biologist, and Vigdis's background is in sports management. We have been kayaking in the area for more than 10 years. We discovered that although we are on the "wrong" side of the bay we get gorgeous sunsets most evenings. Our love for being on the water inspired us to share this wonderful experience where nature is in focus and you can just relax and enjoy mother nature from the kayak. As a kayak lodge we do many types of tours and have high quality gear for you to enjoy on this trip. We want you to experience one of the reasons why we fell in love with the area so you can join on this truly natural experience.

Where you'll be

On this trip our route sometimes depends of weather or water conditions. Leaving Punta Cuchillo we can expect to kayak around Isla Jesucita and go ashore there as well. Other times we go ashore on Isla Cedros. On certain occasions we may also go into the Bay of Paquera and pass by Playa Nicoyana.

This was one of the best experiences we have had on Airbnb. We had the sincere pleasure of getting two guides. Luis and Juan were so genuine about their love and interest for costa Rican wild life - their passion was contagious. They set us immediately at ease, setting out expectations for the trip, giving a scientific background about what we'd be seeing. Started with a sunset kayak, looking for different animals, chatting and learning about them. Pulled onto an island, quick hike to watch the sunset and have a little snack. After that, we went back to the water and hunted for the bioluminescence. The moon was very bright when we were there so it was harder to see it. But Luis determined as ever, wouldn't stop searching until we found some - it was worth the hunt. They looked like the Northern lights in the water! The experience was magical (in ever sense of the word) and I recommend it to anyone.

This was a great experience even though we didnt get to see the bioluminescence. Luis was a fantastic tour guide and gave us a lot of information and answered any questions we had. He tried REALLY hard to find the areas with the bioluminescence, but it was almost a full moon with not a cloud in the sky so the conditions of nature were really against us. It was still a beautiful kayaking experience in the ocean watching the sunset from water and moving along by the light of the moon, but the main attraction just didnt make an appearance! Know this risk going into it, and you will have solid expectations and a great time either way!

This was an absolutely incredible experience. Before and after the tour Vigdis was very friendly greeting us providing snacks. On the tour Luis was very knowledgeable and incredibly passionate about everything. I felt extremely safe throughout the whole experience. You could tell he cared greatly about making sure everyone was prepared and comfortable throughout. Seeing the bioluminescence was a once in a lifetime experience that is hard to put into words just how unique and beautiful it is. This is a must see experience!
