What you'll do

You will visit our apiary and butterfly garden in an urban community farm setting. We will tour the property and share the permaculture programs particular to this site. We will find a comfortable place in this beautiful setting and outline our pollinator program reviewing the importance of the honeybees in our urban setting. Your experience will include donning protective gear and going inside the beehive. We will give you first hand, eyes on understanding of how these miracles of evolution function inside the hive. We will then share the fruits of their labor and have a honey tasting. For those uncomfortable with direct access to the hive, we also have observation windows for you to enjoy the program.

What an amazing experience - both the science of bees and interaction with them! You’ll not forget this wonderful experience. And John and Teresa are both passionate and fun.

What a wonderful experience. John and his wife were very knowledgeable and passionate about beekeeping. The weather was kind of iffy that day but they made it work. Would definitely recommend experiencing it for yourself!

What a fantastic opportunity to learn about bees, their habitats, and hive behavior from everyday experts! John and his wife provide a unique hands-on learning experience and share all their practical knowledge from management of several apiaries in the area. If you are wondering if this is worth the visit, hands down the answer is yes. Bees are amazing and even this high school Biology teacher learned so many interesting things. Suit up and go in for a close up ecological experience. Your admission fee funds ongoing education and offsets the cost for John to care for multiple hives in the metropolitan area. He also rescues feral hives (swarms) and relocates them to save bees from extermination. Ten out of ten experience, for sure. #bucketlist #knowledgeispower

We really enjoyed learning about beekeeping from John & Therese. They have a passion for bees that shows in their presentation. First they do a short talk on bees and beekeeping (we were seated on chairs under a tree for shade) Then we put on our white beekeeper suits to enter where the hives are kept and John opens a hive and we see the honeycomb structure with bees growing from eggs to adult. And of course the honey. None of us were stung. We were teen to adult age, but I think ~8-10 year olds would be fine. One could watch through a window outside the hive area if someone was too nervous. Afterwards we had a honey tasting and were able to notice subtle differences in honey where the bees were pollinating different crops. Drinks and snacks are provided in addition to honey.

My partner and I are locals have talked about having bees in the future but as we don't know much about them. I saw this experience as a good introduction to see if this was something that we could do. We were lucky to have John and Barb all to ourselves and they are both great teachers! They made sure we were safe from stings and comfortable around the hives. Their hives are located in a local community garden, meters away from a busy street, but to me that just shows how possible bee keeping is! They answered all our questions and invited us to future bee keeping meetings to learn more about the bee community. Then they provided nice heathy snacks afterwards while we chatted more. You can really tell how much they love their bees! I highly recommend this experience and we learned a lot! Thank you for the great morning.
