What you'll do

We'll start off in the barn with coffee and baked goodies where we'll talk about sheep, and shepherding, as well as the all-important safety briefing. You'll also get a chance to meet Minnie, our sheepdog, and see some of the equipment we'll be using during the day.

We'll then move out into the fields to meet the sheep and lambs. We'll do basic sheep checks in both flocks and also check on any lambs which are separate having been weaned.

What we do next will depend on what we find when we're out, but we may need to bring all the lambs into the sheep handling system for weighing and grading, or catch up some sheep for foot treatments, to dose some wormers or check the condition of the lambs. Whatever "work" needs doing, there is always time for a tickle ... between their front legs is a favourite spot ;)

We will drive between some of the blocks of land as we may need our vehicles when we're with the sheep as we keep a lot of kit on them, and certainly find time to enjoy the views. It will be the quad-bike, Polaris Ranger ATV or Landrover depending on what work we think we'll need to do. Regardless of what work needs doing, we'll end up at the edge of our land overlooking the beautiful River Dove for coffee and a picnic lunch before heading back to the barn for final questions and to say farewell.

I have been farming sheep in the beautiful Derbyshire Dales for the last few years and I just love my sheep! They are such a friendly bunch and a pleasure to work with and it is great sharing them with others, especially those who have never got close to sheep before. We run two different flocks, pedigree Shropshires and a commercial flock of Suffolk Mules. Our farm is Farm Assured (Red Tractor) and we're members of the Pasture Fed Livestock Association. I'm passionate about sustainable agriculture and conservation and we maintain our land with few chemical inputs and work with, rather than against nature. I'm a qualified teacher and have been teaching children and adults all my life in a variety of roles including being a BHS Horse riding instructor.

Where you'll be

The Derbyshire Dales just south of Ashbourne is arguably one of the most beautiful parts of the English countryside. We have rolling grassland hills, bustling hedgerows full of wildlife and a vibrant and extensive river network. Some of our land is bordered by the River Dove which is a world-renowned fly-fishing river. In addition to our sheep, we generally see plenty of wildlife.
