What you'll do

Believe it or not my hometown of Cortez, Colorado is located in one of the highest concentrations of archaeological ruins in the entire world! Learn about these ancient peoples & culture on our 2.5 mile easy walk in Hawkins Nature Preserve. (Dogs are welcome, but please ask before you bring Fido, and leash laws must be maintained! )

Our walk follows the same route as the Mesa Verde Sunrise Tour, but you won't have to wake up at dawn! We start walking across an ancient seabed of slick-rock and into pinon-juniper woodlands. We will stop at the edge of a canyon to admire the surrounding mountain ranges & mesas before continuing our walk to a 1,000+ year-old Puebloan ruin. At the archeological site I like to surprise guests with a local treat and discuss the differences and similarities that our modern culture has to those of the Ancient Puebloans. After enjoying our treat we continue our loop back to the parking lot. Along the walk we will stop occasionally to learn about the unique geology & ecology of southwest Colorado.

Guests are encouraged to ask questions along the way. As a Cortez-local I know most of history/folklore of the area and am passionate about sharing this special place with others!

During the school year I teach high school music in Shiprock, New Mexico on the Northern Navajo reservation. I live in Cortez with my two cats and enjoy hiking, mountain biking and paddle boarding all around the Four Corners!

Although I am not a certified expert in anything but teaching music, I have lots of friends who are archaeologists, biologists and the like. I love history, culture and science - so I've soaked up a lot of information about this area! As a young person I also spent my summers guiding bike & hike tours in southeast Alaska - so I'm experienced as a tour -guide & story-teller. I love meeting and getting to know new people and share my passion and knowledge for the place I live, work & play!

Where you'll be

Hawkins Nature Preserve is a 122-acre preserve on the southern edge of Cortez. Access is FREE & open to the public, but it can be difficult to find the perfect sunrise watching spot if you've never been. After our tour, it's easy to come back to explore the area by yourself. Hawkins is a popular dog-walking area, but please check in with me before your bring your friend! **This tour is NOT in Mesa Verde NP, but has greats views of the plateau.
