What you'll do

[NOTE: THIS IS A WALKING TOUR, NOT A BOAT TOUR. PLEASE BE AWARE OF THAT WHEN BOOKING. The first photo of people on a boat is incorrect and still pending replacement from Airbnb.]

Everyone who comes to Chicago thinks that a boat tour is the best way to experience the city, and we beg to differ. We'll take you on a tour that lets you experience a totally hidden side of this otherwise "been-there, done-that" experience of Chicago! We call this tour a "Beyond the Boat" tour, as we'll take you BEYOND what even the best boat tours are able to show you. Curious to see inside some famous Art Deco masterpieces on the river? We'll do that. Think the only stunning views of Chicago are from 95 floors up and you have to pay to get them?  We're happy to prove you wrong. Hugging the river, we'll pop in and out of buildings to see their fabulous and fascinating interiors, weaving our way through train stations, soaring lobbies, and more!

The Chicago River, flowing silently through the heart of the city, provides amazing and world-famous views of over a hundred years' worth of architecture, and it's a wonderful idea to see it from a boat. But wouldn't you like to see more? Isn't it time you got "Beyond the Boat"?

I am the owner & head tour guide at Chicago's #1-rated walking tour business on TripAdvisor, Inside Chicago Walking Tours. After several years in Chicago's river tour industry, I started my own walking tour business in 2014 in order to be able to show people the street-level and interior views of Chicago's world-famous architecture. Not only is my company ranked #1 tour out of more than 300 on TripAdvisor, it's also been featured in numerous online publications as a "best of Chicago" tour. I'm also responsible for creating the tours and training the guides who earned Chicago's architecture river tour a spot in the 25 BEST TOURS IN THE WORLD on TripAdvisor. My company’s tours are the opposite of the big-brand, scripted tours. We specialize in truly unique, personalized experiences of Chicago. Thank you for supporting small business!

Where you'll be

We'll start with the interior of a world-famous Art Deco gem right on the river, followed by a walk past early 20th century railway bridges and sweeping, stunning views of the river's confluence point. Weaving through train stations, ethnic markets, stunning lobbies, and more, we'll explore a totally different, hidden perspective of Chicago's gorgeous riverfront architecture -- we'll get "beyond the boat"!

Our tour guide, Ian, was knowledgeable, sincere, thoughtful, and inspiring. More than worth the price and time, I consider this experience a once-in-a-lifetime kind of tour.

This was a great tour! My tour guide, Ian, was friendly, knowledgeable and fun. The tour isn’t too short or too long and the walking is a suitable distance. I had plenty of time to do other things that day which is one of the reasons I chose this tour. I would recommend this tour to family and friends. Ian was awesome, knowledgeable in the history of the city and architecture, happily debunking rumors with facts. Follow the instructions and show up a little early, it would be a shame to rush the tour. Seeing Chicago with this tour company is a wonderful experience and affordable- do it!

Good experience. You get some interesting stories about Chicago. Don't expect too much on architectural topics. It's more about stories that happened in Chicago.

Hillary was fantastic. She has a unique perspective that gives you a more meaningful experience than a typical tour. The boat unexpectedly had a mechanical malfunction and did not come on schedule. Hillary was great about letting us know and giving a choice about what to do. We got a great personal tour of some amazing parts of Chicago. Highly recommended. Even with the change, she offered for us to go on another interior tour the next day to make up for it, however we were only in Chicago for the day. Thanks again Hillary!
