What you'll do

The Monarchy has left a lasting mark on the institutions and cultural landscape of France despite it being a Republic for a little over a century and a half. Its influence extends even to the geography of the capital, which you will get to explore during this experience.

In order to fully appreciate the rich history of this royal past, join Douglas, a local resident and doctoral student at The Sorbonne, for coffee or tea in the sumptuous Jardin d’Hiver of the Hôtel de Crillon. The legend goes that Marie-Antoinette once took piano lessons in the hotel, originally the private residence of the Duke of Aumont. Years later she was be executed on the Place de la Concorde out in front.

We’ll soak in the princely ambience of the palace and learn about the history of the neighbourhood. Then we will set out on foot to discover the key royal sites from the Place de la Concorde to the Louvre.

A few places we’ll see or pass by: the neo-classical architecture of magnificent squares; the place where Louis XIV spent his childhood; the gardens designed by Le Nôtre, the landscape architect of Versailles; the townhouse where the Marquis de La Fayette married Adrienne de Noailles...

A short tour of the exterior of the Louvre, the Paris residence of a number of royal families, will bring our time together to a close.

Originally from the US, I have lived in Paris since 2013 and have been leading tours on Airbnb since 2017. I am the founder of a luxury travel agency called Vendôme Circle that provides unique experiences focusing on French history, culture and art de vivre.

I am also currently writing a dissertation on the philosophy of Jean-Paul Sartre at the Sorbonne from which university I received a Master's in Contemporary Philosophy with a thesis on Sartre's The Words.

I have a great passion for France's history and writers and I love sharing it with visitors to Paris who are curious to discover the richness of its culture. I enjoy getting to know my guests and learning from them, too. I look forward to meeting you soon!
