What you'll do

Guests will be invited to my Spanish Revival home nestled in one of San Diego's many secret canyons. During the 2 hour class, participants will be guided around my succulent garden and the adjacent succulent laden canyon . Guests will be invited to gather cuttings from the plants in order to make a succulent creation of their very own. I will provide a selection of containers, the soil, tools, and gloves needed for creating a succulent arrangement to take with you. Participants will be encouraged to take additional cuttings for future planting and propagating at their home. (TSA does allow plants and cuttings in carry-on and in checked luggage on domestic flights. International guests should check with their individual airline.)

I will spend about 30 minutes demonstrating and assembling various arrangements of my own while discussing 4 of my most successful learned techniques. Participants will be then be free to enjoying making their own creations with my guidance. Some arrangement can be made by gluing succulent cuttings onto a moss backing, while others may choose to use the traditional method of planting directly in soil.

Guests may enjoy creating on my rooftop deck with a view of the San Diego bay, while enjoying various snacks and beverages provided.
Other things to note
Please think about bringing sunscreen, and any beverages or snacks you may want while creating.

Meet your host, Kathryn

In 2011 after retirement, I transformed my once perfectly manicured lawn into a prolific succulent garden. Being a water-wise San Diegan was my motivation. The plants prospered, I added new interesting specimens and before I knew it I was creating arrangements from the cuttings in my garden. I received training from one of our best San Diego master gardeners who specializes in succulents. Over the years, I have been asked to make the decorations for several weddings and other special events around town. My idea for classes evolved when an enthusiastic customer asked me to share my design tips with her and her friends. I am always on the lookout for unique containers to use for my succulent designs. Lately, my signature item has been shoes...the higher the heal, the more outrageous, the better!

Where you'll be

Guests should feel free to revisit the garden areas for added succulent cuttings as their creation demands and for souvenirs. In addition, to the containers I provide, participants are welcome to bring any favorite containers they might wish to use...a favorite pair of shoes that in reality just hurt to walk in, an old bowl from a favorite aunt, a wooden birdhouse. Together, we can make almost anything work with our wondrous succulents!
