What you'll do

It's best to arrive a few minutes early to get settled in. We can listen to whatever music makes you happy. There's natural light, accent lights, and adjustable overhead lights. The work space is climate controlled. If the weather is nice we could work on the screened in porch.

1. Introductions and a quick rundown of the process.

2. Sketch the design idea on paper. Or, for people who don't want to sketch their own ideas, I'll have a variety of pre-printed 4"x4" designs available.

3. Trace with soft graphite then transfer image to the 4"x4" linoleum block.

4. Using various gouges, carve away the components of the block you DON'T want to see in your final print. It is a relief print so you leave only what you want to see in the final product.

5. Choose the ink color you'd like. We'll use Speedball Oil-based Fabric Ink. Mix on the glass plate then ink the brayer (aka "roller"). Coat the block with ink then flip it onto the fabric surface. You can pick one of the following to print - canvas wine tote, canvas zippered pouch, or 21"x21" bandanna.

6. Apply even pressure to the back of the block then carefully pull it off.

7. Dry to touch in 1 day - allow 7 days to fully set.

8. The workshop is 3 hours and can accommodate up to ten people.

Living in Asheville over ten years now, surrounded by all this talent, I’ve gained the confidence to share my visions and projects with my community. The overwhelmingly positive support and encouragement I received led to the cultivation of my small linoprint business, Notes From Abroad. I print both paper and textiles, online and locally.

I grew up sailing on Lake Erie so my work started with a distinctly nautical theme. Didn’t take long to incorporate my love for Appalachia, showcasing what I learned while getting my B.S. in Environmental Science from UNCA. The ideas took off in every direction from there.

The Print & Play Workshop is the natural culmination of every experience I've had till now. Block printing is such a cool, yet under-the-radar print technique. I love to teach because I love to share the joy of the process!

Where you'll be

The work space will be in my home studio. It's climate controlled, there's a (sort of) view of the woods behind the house, and there's a full bathroom. There is a speaker you can link to if you've got a Bluetooth player.

It is not wheelchair accessible at the moment. I live in a cul-de-sac so please be mindful of where you park. I have an indoor/outdoor cat so plan accordingly if you've got allergies.

Mathilda was great! I enjoyed getting to know and work with her. She made this experience personal to me and my husband and even gave us some recommendations on other things to do while we were in town. Overall a wonderful experience and great to work with!

Mathilda was very welcoming and flexible! She was willing to allow us to shape our experience towards our interests. My son is crazy about Harry Potter, so I asked Mathilda ahead of our visit to help create some Harry Potter images for us to use. She chose iconic images and simplified them into something my son could be successful with. We traced and transferred the images with soft graphite pencils to create a guide and cut into the linoleum blocks. Each step was carefully explained and she had many examples to share! We were novices to this art form but she helped us feel very comfortable. Mathilda was very encouraging to my son and let him tell her when he needed help. She also went over tool safety with him prior to beginning. We couldn’t be happier with what we created and plan to explore this art form more when we return home! This is an experience that is not to be missed!

This class was so much fun. I brought my 14-year-old son and we both had a blast. We ended up with beautiful keepsakes and enough knowledge to try doing this on our own some day.

This was really a fun workshop! I booked this workshop for me, my mom and my sister for my mom's birthday. Mathilda was very friendly and easy to work with. She obviously has a lot of experience with block printing. She walked us through the process of choosing and image that we liked, carving out the stamp, and printing the image onto something fun! She was very helpful, but she also allowed for us to be independently creative. We all left with prints that we completely were handmade by us! I could not recommend her workshop more highly to someone who wants to do something a little creative (but not too challenging) on their vacation.
