What you'll do

You will arrive to Punalu'u Black Sand Beach Park. This park has a large, paved parking lot alongside bathroom facilities. Once you are parked, I will greet you and we will take a short, leisurely walk on the black sand beach where you will learn about Kauila, the Hawai'ian Turtle Goddess, who is said to have been born here. The chances of gazing upon either hawksbill or green sea turtles on our walk are high, as they tend to find rest or nest on this beach. Our walk will take us to the spot where we will settle in to our yoga practice. We will be in the black sand between a water lilly-lined fresh water pond and the ocean beneath palm trees.

Our yoga practice will last for approximately one hour. It will include mantra, pranayama (breath work), asana (physical poses), and a short guided meditation of gratitude. We will witness the sun setting, hear the waves crashing and breathe in the healing salt air. All yoga sessions are all-levels, so whether you are a beginner or a seasoned yogi, you will feel right at home. Following our practice, you will enjoy an organic coconut water or local craft beer (your choice!) before we part ways.

Yoga is union - of body to mind, of consciousness to super-consciousness, of yin to yang. Yoga is a journey and each beautiful soul's own journey is unique. My journey began about 10 years ago in Los Angeles, California where I was blessed with a yogi as a roommate. He inspired me to begin practicing yoga and I haven't stopped since. Now I have 350 hours of teacher training. 300 in Advanced Hatha Yoga and 50 in Ganja Yoga.

Join me for a couple of hours to explore your mind/body organism through mindful movement and serene stillness. As you tune in to the sounds of the ocean and the wind in the palm trees overhead, witness another beautiful day in paradise end as the sun sets behind you. After, revive your senses with a cold beverage and re-connect in nature. Linger on the black sand with the sea turtles as long as you like.

My husband and I were thrilled to find such a unique way to decompress after our 8+ hrs of travel from the mainland to the big island. The spray from the ocean waves crashing against the black sand beach misted our skin while the rhythmic percussive sound of the waves seamlessly matched our breath in meditation. It was soooo relaxing! We felt secure with Tamara as she guided us through sun/moon salutations, balancing poses like crow and head stand, and postures. She helped us realign and reinvigorate our bodies without overexerting us. Tamara also had great knowledge of the history of the area we were practicing on! She told us of an origin story I had never heard before, which allowed me to appreciate this experience even more. She left us on Panalu'u to enjoy our accomplishments in each other's company, watching the "reverse sunset", cold brews in hand. A wonderful beginning to our Big island adventure. We hope to revisit this experience each time we revisit the island. Mahalo Tamara! Cheers!
