What you'll do

We meet at Earthbound Farm, where Beekeeper Marc leads a maximum of 10 guests at a time on a walking tour of a flourishing organic property. During it, we look at our honeybees at work, examining in close detail the physical and social attributes that make them the planet's most efficient pollinators. We learn to recognize the types of flowering plants that are most attractive to them. On the way, we also meet native pollinators, such as bumblebees and hummingbirds, which in only 400 years our European honeybees have learned to out-compete. After our information-packed yet surprisingly entertaining tour (so wer'e told!) , we suit ourselves up and head to a colony. We pretend we're predators and get the girls excited about our sudden appearance. Then we smoke our bees back into mellowness and open up the hive to examine all the wonders inside. Guests handle frames filled with honey and covered with up to 1,500 unexpectedly peaceable bees. When we're recovered from this strangely emotional experience, we head back to base to taste the sweet bounty our girls produce.

I'm a beekeeper and amateur ethologist who has been studying animal intelligence for 25 years. I began beekeeping while a student at Yale, when I had the chance to house-sit for a professor of mine who kept 3 hives as well as as a 7-foot New Jersey pine constrictor. The bees and snake rapidly displayed an environmental awareness that fascinated me. Since then I've studied sharks and animals one would not expect to be terribly bright, such as the American horseshoe crab (both sharks and crabs are in fact very smart animals). I returned to bees several years ago after a long separation. What we do on the tour is get up close to them in the field and inside the hive to observe first-hand their odd, alien, very effective way of mastering their environment. We wear professional bee suits when we get really close to our girls!

Where you'll be

Earthbound Farm is a pioneering organic farm located on 4.5 acres in lush, fertile Carmel Valley. Established in 1984, it produces a range of fresh-cut produce including berries, tomatoes, herbs, greens, as well as a wide selection of flowering plants. Its farm stand is a popular local destination for lunch and seasonal foodstuffs. Come for the tour, stay for lunch! (It's a farm, so wear sensible shoes.)

The weather was overcast and quite windy, so the girls mostly stayed in their hives. It was still a great experience - Marc is incredibly knowledable and made the whole tour fun. And the honey was delicious to boot!

The location was beautiful, and Marc's humor made the experience well worth it! We learned more about bees than we ever thought possible and was gifted a beeswax lip balm at the end. We highly recommend this experience to anyone who is traveling to Carmel!

Marc is amazing! He is a pro and he knows the ins and outs of bee-sciety. This was our second time on this tour because Marc was such a great host the first time around. Our second time, coming back at a different time of the year, was completely different than the first time. It was awesome and we learned a ton about bees and their keepers!

If you are on the fence, just do it. Marc is super fun and very knowledgeable on bees. I love the sense of humor that Marc brings to his tours. We learned a lot and loved donning the bee keepers suit and getting to see the bees up close in action. We even got to see the queen bee. The whole experience was quite the treat.
