What you'll do

My husband Joseph and I will welcome the guests to our home and invite them to our appropriately decorated garden with lanterns and garlands. If they so wish, they may help with sardine grilling or enjoy a first drink and a few snacks while my husband handles the grill. During dinner, we will give them a brief history of the São João celebration, what it means for the city, how it used to be in previous decades and how it is celebrated today, as some traditions have faded away. After dinner, the whole group will walk from our home to downtown Porto, about 30-minute walk and do the mandatory thing all Porto people do that night, but obviously visitors as well, which is to hammer passers-by with a plastic hammer on the head. Instead of the hammer, guests can always carry a long-stemmed garlic flower and rub under people's noses with it. Feel free to do it because it's the only day of the year you are allowed to do so. If authorized this year, we will launch a couple of sky lanterns/hot air balloons on the way downtown. Our services end when we get downtown. Guests can then proceed, if they wish, to look for the best spot to enjoy the spectacular fireworks display on the Douro river.

As a true "tripeira", I have been hosting São João parties every year on the evening of June 23 in our garden in Porto. This is the longest night of the city as the residents celebrate their beloved saint - St John. My husband Joseph and I invite a few friends and relatives and we kick off the big party with the traditional São João "sardinhada" - grilled sardines, boiled potatoes with Portuguese olive oil, grilled bell pepper salad, olives and corn bread. But, of couse, we start by having a bowl of "caldo verde" - the queen of Portuguese soups. The guests are welcome to salt and grill the sardines themselves. Having experienced since young age the old traditions of jumping over the bonfires and dancing the whole night, finishing on the beach at dawn, I can provide my guests a genuine experience of this old Porto celebration.
