What you'll do

Explore this former industrial district that is now Portland's "Chelsea District" of New York--a vibrant epicenter of art and culture. As I share some of its rich history, not even known to many locals, you will visit some of my favorite shops in the area that embody Portland's charm and quirkiness. You'll get great gift ideas and will have time to shop. Portland is also well-known for its food scene and the Pearl District has some stellar restaurants. I'll take you to a cute little bakery as well as a newly opened vegan ice-cream store that's truly AMAZING! As we wind our way through the Pearl, I'll highlight architectural gems and take you to a landmark on the National Register of Historic Places that is a must-see destination of the Pearl.

Having lived in Tokyo, Paris and New York, I appreciate the big-city energy, yet small community feel, of Portland's Pearl District. I'm fluent in English and Japanese, proficient in French and currently learning Spanish. I've traveled extensively and enjoy immersing myself in the culture, meeting locals and discovering places off the beaten path. Let me create that experience for you on my tour!

I have a flexible schedule, so if the listed tour times don't work with your schedule, feel free to contact me and we can work something out. Tours are given in Japanese upon request

Our first stop is a store with unique products designed and manufactured here in PDX! We'll go to one of my favorite boutiques with beautiful, hand crafted goods, a charming stationery store, as well as a cute bakery and vegan ice-cream shop. Marisa's tour of the Pearl district is a delight, and an extremely efficient way to get the highlights of this very cool neighborhood. It was off-season and I was the only tour-taker, so I really appreciate her still running the tour just for me. Marisa has curated a delightful list of neighborhood specialty vendors that I would never have found on my own. She relates interesting history of the area, and is multi-lingual. If you have limited time in Portland, Marisa is a great resource to help you get the most of your time. She even arranges refreshments at various points in the tour, so you're getting plenty for your money. I came away with a good sense of where I did and did not want to eat dinner as well. The last stop is a traditional Japanese tea service with oodles of knowledge along with the tea. A five-star experience all around! I now feel like a semi-expert on Portland, so kudos to Marisa!

Marisa is a wonderful guide! Her tours are special, and I never would have saw Portland in the same way without her. She answered all my questions, and was very knowledgable, easygoing, and friendly. The tea tasting at the end was my favorite!

Marisa is a lovely and friendly person. We enjoyed talking to her about all of the places she's lived. We would have liked to have learned even more about local insights, culture and historic anecdotes and current trends of the Pearl area that we walked through. Highlight was the beautiful and amazing tea shop!

Marisa's tour of the Pearl District is a great way to ground yourself in one of Portland's historic and charming neighborhoods. It mixes stops at local creative retail with historical context, notable architecture and local food stops ,with a final stop at very special tea shop where you learn about and drink a variety of teas with a tea professional (there is such a thing). Truly a special tour. Marisa is a lovely host. Highly recommend.

My college-age daughter and I had 3 days in Portland and wanted to take a tour that would introduce us to some local food and shopping. We loved everything about this tour!Marisa was a wonderful guide—just the right balance of talking and independence. We would not have found any of the stores or food on our own, and we want to go back to every single place she took us. Highlights for us were the rose croissant and warm beignets. Wait, and the vegan ice cream. Oh, and the tea! We loved the tea. If you have any presents you need to buy for people, the stores are terrific—high quality, local stores. Another fun thing on the tour is that Marisa made us feel like Portland insiders by telling us how locals perceive certain things—like Blue Star Donuts vs. Voodoo Donuts. She also gave us a good sense of how the Pearl District has changed over the past 100 years. We highly recommend this tour!
