What you'll do

At the east end of Eggemoggin Reach, a string of islands stretches along the Brooklin shore, several of which are preserves owned by Maine Coast Heritage Trust. We’ll launch from Naskeag Point and, with a little help from the tidal currents, we’ll paddle around these islands and take time to visit a few. We’ll check-out one of the biggest glacial erratic boulders around on Hog Island, once owned by author E.B. White’s family. On Big Babson Island we’ll have a chance to walk the trail through the island’s spruce-rimmed meadows. Elsewhere we’ll paddle past massive shell mounds left by the islands’ earlier inhabitants, and with the WoodenBoat School nearby, we’re likely to come across a few classic wooden sailboats. We’ll find a pretty spot for lunch and you’ll have a chance to soak-in the island ambiance at your leisure. Depending on the group and the conditions, we’ll paddle 8 - 10 miles with a little help from the current, with an hourly break on an island. This leisurely-paced excursion is a good trip for beginners or those who haven’t paddled on the ocean. Most islands are closely-spaced and some areas can be fairly sheltered. The current will help us return to the launch.

I've been guiding and teaching on the Maine coast since 2010, mostly around Stonington (just south of Brooklin) and have lived just across Eggemoggin Reach from these islands for a couple of winters. I wrote the guidebook 'AMC's Best Sea Kayaking in New England,' as well as a number of articles in sea kayaking and outdoor magazines, and will soon have a new book out about a two-month sea kayak journey my wife Rebecca and I took along the Maine coast. I've usually worked for other outfitters, often guiding many trips in the same areas, to destinations that get a bit repetitious, but I'm enthusiastic about taking people to a group of islands I've loved exploring, that commercial guided trips seldom visit. As an instructor, I'm also very happy to help paddlers discover new skills

What's included

Where you'll be

Accessible only by boat, these islands are a mix of granite ledge and glacial till, topped by dense spruce forests. Hog Island has a pair of broad, beach-lined coves, a massive boulder and the bluffs of Devil's Head. Big Babson Island's meadows turn verdant with wildflowers, and from the Torrey Islands we'll get a broad view up the reach toward the Deer Isle-Sedgwick Bridge. Boulders dot the shorelines - perfect for learning boat-maneuvering.
