I'm Kata, a licensed guide in Austria. Originally from Hungary, 8 years ago I came to Salzburg on a day trip. On that day I fell in love with this breathtakingly beautiful city, so I quit my marketing job in London, packed my bags, moved and haven't looked back since! I started guiding bike tours, first as a summer job, but I soon realised how much I enjoy showing guests around, sharing my knowledge, and getting to know new people every day. With 7 years of experience and now with my official license I can show it all to you!

My co-host is Johann, who has been a chef for the past 26 years in Austria and abroad. 4 years ago he started his own cooking school where he teaches to prepare authentic Austrian dishes. He will be the one serving you breakfast and teaching you baking during this experience.

Where you'll be

Your culinary experience will start through a large green gate where you will enter formal caves for beer and wine storing, which were carved into the Mönchsberg mountain about 500 years ago. A very unique and atmospheric location for your baking lesson and breakfast indeed. Then our walk will take us through the narrow medieval streets, the large open squares of the Old Town, up a hill to enjoy some amazing views of the city and the Alps.

This was truly our highlight of our Trip to Salzburg. We simply walk from our hotel across the river to the cooking school and we were met with aprons and smiles. We were offered coffee and juices when we arrived. We’ve been set out to make strudel and Christmas cookies. Our teacher showed us how to slice the apples and dust them with sugar and cinnamon. She then relayed the recipe for the strudel dough. Each family took a table and we made strudel by ourselves. It was put in the oven and 30 minutes later, after a bowl of either homemade and delicious goulash or lentil soup, we had our strudel and our warm Christmas cookies dusted with confectioner sugar. Then Katalin came to take us for a tour of downtown Salzburg. She was kind enough to walk us down the street of Mozart’s birthplace. Even more importantly, she let me stop and stop in stores to shop for purses. She clued me in on the best Mozart balls to buy for friends. We had the most pleasant walk in the old town with back streets that very few people ever get to see. She is lovely, charming, sweet, and generous with her time. We ended our tour in a restaurant and we were able to talk over drinks and cappuccinos. I feel like we met a friend for life. I highly recommend the baking strudel tour because the food is so wonderful. Our teacher was warm, kind and patient. .Kaitlin, our walking tour guide is so sincere. I am not in a hurry to get home after this lovely vacation. When I do arrive, one of the very first things I’m going to do is make strudel and Viennese Christmas cookies. This is a must do tour while in Salzburg.

Katalin is a wonderful communicator, who takes a lot of pride - not only in providing a special tour experience filled with many interesting facts and tidbits along the way but also in the way she leads her tours, which was a great balance between developing a personal connection, keeping the tour moving and answering a lot of questions. The cooking class was fabulous too and a great addition to Katalin’s walking tour. We not only learned to make apple strudel, but we also learned to make Salzburger Nockerl - which was super easy and extremely delicious.

A fantastic experience which left me with the skills of how to cook a lovely traditional apfelstrudel and Salzburg Nockerl, and a wealth of knowledge about the city of Salzburg and it’s treasures. Katalin is warm and friendly and showed us many things that we would not have known about had we taken our own walking tour. It’s great that the walking tour is after the cooking class as you need to walk off the apfelstrudel, I couldn’t stop at one piece! Now I can’t wait to get home and make these dishes for my friends.
