What you'll do

We will meet at our camp in Lagos where you will get a wetsuit and from here we get on the windsurf van and go to the windsurf spot. The drive takes about 15 minutes. At the windsurf spot you will learn how set up your equiment and after that we will start the lesson on the water. We will learn basic maneuvers, how to ride downwind and upwind and if you are up for it, even some basic tricks! After your 3 hours lesson you will be taken back to the camp.

I am a passionate surfer and traveller, working since 7 years as a head manager of one of the oldest surf camps and watersport schools in the area - Algarve Watersport. Together with a group of friends we teach watersports such as windsurfing, surfing, kitesurfing , SUP and wake. I love the ocean and I try to spend as much time in the water as I can! I am also an expert when it comes to the Western Algarve, knowing almost all the surf spots and the best places to go and see.

Where you'll be

Our windsurf spot is a beautiful natural reserve, not far away from Lagos. On the way to the lagoon you will see aqmazing landscape of Algarvian countryside. The lagoon is shallow and safe for windsurf beginners. If you are lucky you can see fish, turtles and unique birds during your lesson.

I’d say that if you have never windsurfed or sailed that it would be useful to do some research before attempting this activity. The guides were friendly and you are taken to a calm lagoon, which seems like a much easier space for learning how to windsurf as opposed to the open ocean. As someone that loves surfing but apparently really sucks at managing a sail, I encourage you to maybe read about windsurfing or have experience sailing beforehand. Who knows, I could just really, really suck at windsurfing. I usually am not someone that gets easily defeated by new activities, but really think having a more thorough understanding of how wind and sails work would make this much more enjoyable. Instead I found myself feeling frustrated and as though this kind of activity would be much easier in a one on one setting rather than a group.

The windsurfing takes place at a beautiful lagoon, with very calm water, which makes beginners feel safe. The instructor was clearly an experienced windsurfer himself and very friendly. However, the group exists not only of first time beginners, so levels are a little different which leaves the instructor’s attention divided. The focus of this windsurfing lesson is on ‘getting a feeling’ for windsurfing and experimenting a little yourselves, rather than detailed instructions or step-by-step lessons. If actual lessons are what you’re after, it might be worth informing about this beforehand. But if you’re just about getting a feel for standing on a board and enjoying a couple of hours in beautiful scenery, I would strongly advise you to take this experience.

It was a fun experience to take a couple sessions of windsurfing for the first time! Becca is super accommodating and responsive to specific feedback and requests. The experience will obviously depend on wind/weather conditions. I'll be booking a few more sessions when I'm in Lagos again!

We drove to a really nice lagoon and got to know something about the technique and tried it out. It was good for a beginner - the group was nice and not to big.
