What you'll do

Upon your arrival you and your group will be rowed out to, and board our Classic Yacht in a sheltered cove. Once aboard you can make yourself at home and be oriented to the Yacht and all the features and equipment. Then it's time to ready the sails and head out according to the tides and currents of the day. We will exit the cove into the Sooke Basin and make our way out through scenic East Sooke and the Sooke Harbour onto the Strait of Juan de Fuca (Salish Sea). We will sail the strait according to prevailing winds and currents, experiencing the scenery of the West Coast, with Olympic Mountains as a backdrop. Eagles, Seals and Sea Lions are common sights as well as Porpoises, Orcas, Humpbacks and Gray Whales can be seen. You can choose to sit back and enjoy, take photographs, take the helm, learn about wind direction, points of sail and how to steer the Yacht. According to your comfort level you can remain in the cockpit, enjoy the accommodations below or head out onto the deck. You can learn how to operate the winches, trim the sails, tack, jibe and sail the Yacht. Returning to the mooring, we'll secure the Yacht and return to shore.

I've been passionate about sailing for almost 30 years and I have lived on the West Coast of Vancouver Island for 20 years. I'm a licensed Pleasure Craft Operator and have completed the CPSS Basic Cruising Standard course as well as holding a (ROC) for VHF communications. My Yacht is a classic 30ft (IOR) Racing Sloop in compliance with Coast Guard Safety Regulations, located on a private mooring in a sheltered cove. The area offers a unique, fantastic sailing experience in the Sooke Basin and the Juan de Fuca Strait (Salish Sea). Scenery and wildlife in the area are second to none, Eagles, Sea Lions, Whales and Porpoises are frequently sighted in the area. You and your group can experience sailing, learn the basics and participate by manning the sails or the helm, or just sit back and enjoy the natural beauty.

Where you'll be

Sooke and the West Coast of Vancouver Island are natural wonders. The semi-sheltered Sooke Basin can provide a gradual introduction to the sailing experience. The rugged coastline provides unique scenery all of its own. The scenic Juan de Fuca Strait is backed by the Olympic Mountains on the U.S. side. You can sail out to the international Boundary and see passing ships and freighters.

We had a blast and definitely recommend this excursion! Quintin was so laid back and welcoming. We didn't have the ideal wind for sailing most of the day but did sight some Dall's Porpoises and when the wind picked up we did get some good sailing in.

We had a wonderful experience sailing with Quintin. It was easy to get on the boat, the location is gorgeous and Quintin was a great, knowledgeable and welcoming host. We really enjoyed getting out into the strait of Juan de Fuca, seeing the marine life, participating in sailing the boat and interacting with Quintin. The sail boat is clean and comfortable, host is knowledgeable and makes you feel welcome and relaxed. Highly recommended! Great experience!

Vancouver island is amaZing, anywhere you drive or go is breathtaking scenario. But you have to see it from the boat. I got lucky to meet Quintin and had a great day with him on his boat “Fearless”. Ocean is beautiful in any weather. If it is a strong wind you’ll defenitely have your hands busy :-), if it’s calm, an experienced skipper like Quintin will always find interesting stories to share.
