What you'll do

Let's go for an hike at night time through the desert of Atacama and discover the way the habitants of the Andes were looking at the sky!

We are going to spend 3 hours in easy going walk that will take us to the night journey of the Incas messengers (the Chasqui).
We will start just before the Sunset, from the town of San Pedro de Atacama.
During the walk we will talk about the history of the Ancient civilisation, like Incas and Tiwanaku, we will learn about the Andean constellations, and look at the sky with the eyes of the people of the Andes, we will learn how to spot different celestials corps and Your guide will give you a light induction about astronomy.

We will be guided by the stars and at the end of our walk we will take a rest with some hot wine and snacks.

A van will take You back to Your hotel, where You will be free to think about the things you have learned, the message the stars has given to you and great experience You just have with Us.

If you're night hiking under a full moon, you won't even need a headlamp — but you should always have a good light source along, just in case clouds roll in or terrain blocks you from the light.

** The experience will be cancelled if we won’t meet a minimum number of people **

I left my office job to go to the desert of Atacama, and live in San Pedro de Atacama with my beautiful family.
This year I have founded a tour agency called "ANDO LIBRE", which in Spanish means "Going Free".
I take people in private tours, and most of the time I found myself in amazing places, talking about beautiful things with new good friends.

This was definitely a worthwhile experience! Originally we wanted to do the dinner experience but after messaging with Andrea decided it may not be appropriate with our kids (age 7 & 9). Andrea customized this trip for us to accommodate the kids and make the hike more doable and enjoyable for them. It was amazing to be out on the trail at night, watch the sunset, and spend some extra time looking at the stars so my husband could take some photographs. Andrea is incredibly knowledgeable and passionate about the history and culture of the area. He took us to an area that was not overrun with tourists and we were the only ones on the trail. It was not something we would have known to do on our own or would have felt comfortable attempting to venture through the desert at night by ourselves. He was a great guide and I would highly recommend this experience if you enjoy hiking, and are interested in learning more about the local culture and history.

If you like to hike, don't miss the chance to do some night time exploration of the hills around San Pedro with Andrea and his colleagues. This was a "slightly challenging" hike rather than easy. But, it was made easier by walking sticks and headlamps provided by the host. We absolutely loved being able to get out to see the stars at night without a view of the city. Everyone on our hike saw a shooting star. The hosts did a good job explaining Andean constellations, and I have enjoyed finding them in the sky since the trip.

If you are an experienced hiker with a love for this environment and you want to experience it in a new way, this is a great experience for you! If you have some limited hiking experience there may be elements of this that are more challenging for you, but it is do-able. If you, like me, have some physical injuries/disabilities I would urge you to assess your ability carefully, accept walking sticks and make sure that you and the group knows your limits. The stars really are incredible from the point that Andrea and his team take you too, and you get a basic knowledge of the sky and the interactions the local people have with both the sky and the landscape. We felt that Andrea gave us a good base from which to learn more about this area.

Andrea muy amable y se nota su preocupacion. Novedosa propuesta de mezclar paisaje, historia y enseñar a reconocer principales elementos en una noche estrellada.

A wonderful experience. The views, sunset, insights, cultural references and astronomical details were all fascinating. The Atacama really is a place that has to be experienced at night and this is one of the best ways to do it. Andrea is such a great guy. He's lots of fun and full of interesting information. I also did his Sitial Del Fuego fireside story + wine + food experience and it was similarly excellent.
