What you'll do

We will start this half-day experience meeting up at my house in Villareal, a town just 5kms away from Tamarindo - easy to reach by car or taxi.

During a little walking tour we will visit the vegetable and fruit stand in town, where you will learn about a variety of seasonal fruits and vegetables that grow in Costa Rica. You will get to taste some fruit and sip a fresh coconut while we choose together the ingredients for our meal.

Back at my place, we will prepare a three-course meal consisting of traditional Costa Rican dishes with a twist, including appetizer, main course and dessert. There are different menu options available, and I'll be happy to customize them if you have any food allergies or dietary restrictions, so please let me know upon booking!

The class is completely hands-on, so you will learn how to make every step of the recipes yourself! The appetizer and a seasonal fruit beverage will be served while cooking. Then we will eat in my house terrace, a relaxed ambiance looking out the forest. This experience can be arranged for lunch or dinner time.

Hola! I am María José. Born and raised in sunny Costa Rica, I'm proud of its biodiversity, cultural richness, and the warmth of our people.

In my previous life as an Interior Designer, I worked at a firm designing projects such as hotels and restaurants.

My love for design and gastronomy took me to Italy to study Hospitality Management, what led me to work hosting classes at a cooking school in Florence, one of the most beautiful experiences in my life!

Back in Costa Rica, I moved to Tamarindo and realized there are very limited options for travelers to try authentic, high quality, traditional food.

So here I am, inviting you to join me at my home to prepare together a true Costa Rican meal and share it in a relaxed space, in a chance to show you my culture and recipes for you to bring back home and share with your tribe!

I’m really glad I did this. Maria is a great host — very friendly and fun. I was traveling solo, and she worked with my schedule and did a 1:1 cooking session with me since there were no groups on the days I was traveling. And she helped me figure out the taxi situation from/to my hotel before and after. Maria has a passion for food, design, hospitality, and sharing her love of her country and community. I met Maria at her home and we walked to a nearby market to choose ingredients for the 3 dishes we were going to make - empanadas, ceviche, and plantanos. She talked to me about the different local produce you could find in the market, and even explained how she was tweaking some of the traditional dishes we were making to give them a little extra flavor. She’s a very good teacher who walks you through the steps and does not just do it for you — which I appreciate b/c many cooks will just take over — but she told me what to do and then let me do it on my own. I even made the empanada by hand!! We chatted as we cooked and then at the end she set out the meal on her patio and made a delicious passion fruit and guaro drink wash it down with. Finally, she let me take the left-overs with me to enjoy later. It was a wonderful way to explore local food with a local Costa Rican who loves meeting new people and making them feel welcome!

This was one of my favorite experiences when visiting Tamarindo! Maria is wonderful. She taught us so much about Costa Rican history and cuisine. We felt like locals by the time we left and confident in our cooking skills making empanadas, ceviche, and plantains. Definitely would do it again !

We had a great time cooking with Maria. Going to the local market to pick out what we're going to eat made it feel very unique. It was interesting to learn about the foods we have been eating here. Learning the cooking skills of Tico's was something we'll take with us. I feel like I could easily make ceviche or empanadas at home, and I am super excited to try making plantains in all the ways we learned.
