What you'll do

You will learn to use a spinning wheel and spin wool into yarn. First, you'll explore different types of fiber such as wool from different sheep (for example, Shetland wool from my own sheep, Jacob wool from down the road, Merino wool from the western US, and perhaps even Navajo Churro from the southwest) as well as local alpaca fiber. You'll learn how to "draft" or pull the fibers to align them, which is needed for spinning. Then, we'll put the fiber down and focus on the spinning wheel. You'll learn the parts of the spinning wheel, and learn how to treadle the wheel. You'll then learn how to attach the wool onto the "leader string". Finally, we'll put it all together so you learn how to treadle and draft at the same time, creating yarn from different types of fiber.

I am owner of Two Sisters Mill & Mercantile where we sell sheep and alpaca fiber from my farm and other local farms, fiber arts products such as the yarn I spin, and local hand-made products, and offer classes and rental equipment. I have been spinning my sheep's wool for four years and have spun many different types of wool as well as alpaca fiber. I have 20 years experience teaching in public schools and understand different learning styles and how to break down a complicated skill into steps to get beginning spinners spinning. I love answering questions and teaching people about the world of sheep and fiber.

Where you'll be

The spinning yarn class will take place in our quaint shop that is located in a 100+ year old historic building that started out as an inn around 1900. The shop is filled with colorful fiber and fiber products such as hand-knit scarves, hats, and mittens, hand-woven rugs, pillows, and towels, locally spun yarn, and felted wall hangings and slippers. The spinning wheels used are old-fashioned ones with a single treadle.

More tips

Spun yarn like you see in yarn shops takes years of practice to create - or is done by machine. Since you will be beginning, your yarn will look considerably different than commercial yarns!
