What you'll do

As a visitor to any place, it is hard to know which places are authentic and which ones just plain old tourist traps. I love for visitors to try some of our best local foods and drinks (the ones that locals actually eat and drink) and that's why I want to make sure that they try them the right way and not in some adapted-for-tourists version. Join me in discovering some of Ghent's and Belgium's local delicacies while also getting to know the city, its highlights and some hidden corners. You will not only learn about the city's history and present but also learn about the history of the foods and drinks you'll try.

While making our way through the city we will taste:
- Several sweets (of course there will be chocolate, it's Belgium after all, but we'll also try something different than the usual 'Belgian chocolates' that you can try anywhere in the world)
- My personal favorite/addiction: the Belgian chips/fries (and you will once and for all learn they were never supposed to be 'french fries') and an accompanying sauce and typical snack
- A Belgian refreshment (your choice between a local beer, another very local drink dating back centuries or of course a non-alcoholic option)

After studying and working in different countries around the world, I returned to my hometown of Ghent last year. I have a PhD in Peace and Conflict studies and also work as a researcher but I'm a very social person and love to interact and talk to people from all over the world. That's why I love showing visitors the off-the-beaten-path local places and hidden gems of my city that they probably wouldn't see by themselves. Because I've been away for some time, I appreciate our local dishes and drinks even more and love to show my favorite places to eat and drink them in the city.

Where you'll be

The places where we'll taste were picked not only because of the quality of the food (that was personally tested, repeatedly, by myself) but also because of the friendly and authentic people working there or the unique and historic setting. Between tastings, you'll learn more about some hidden gems that we pass by and anecdotes or stories about some of the highlights of Ghent.
