What you'll do

Guests can relax and soak up the convivial atmosphere of one of Ireland’s smallest surviving medieval castles as we take you through five floors and five hundred years of history in one building. Beginning in the ground floor we will take you through a general history of castles in Ireland and specifically the story of our home. We will relax in the first floor kitchen where guests can hear the story of the castle’s restoration in recent years. As we ascend the narrow spiral stone stairs (watch out for those tricky ‘trip steps’ in particular in the first flight!) we will see the various original defensive features such as the murder hole, gunloops, machicolations and bartizans, all surviving intact from the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. Guests can relax in front of the open fireplace in the upper room of the castle and enjoy tea and a snack while they learn about the Maddens who originally built the castle and ruled the surrounding district for hundreds of years until supplanted in the 1600s and the subsequent fortunes of the building up to today. Learn about the nature of the castle’s construction and the features that make this such an unexpectedly cosy and inviting home.

My wife Alison and I are fortunate to live at Brackloon Castle, a 500 year old fortified Irish tower house. Located less than five miles from the River Shannon in the heart of Ireland, Brackloon is one of the oldest (and smallest) still in use as a family home, with a recorded history stretching back to 1557. We are passionate about the history, heritage and natural landscape of east Galway and we enjoy sharing that passion with our guests.
I worked for many years as an architect with a special interest in conservation and Irish castles and in my spare time publish a website - www.burkeseastgalway.com, dedicated to original research into the history and genealogy of the families of this region and its old buildings. In 2017 the website was one of just nine chosen nationally to be archived by the National Library of Ireland.

You may like to stroll down the road to see the local parish church and 14th century statue of the Madonna of Clonfert or drive 3 minutes to the ancient Clonfert Cathedral and its famous 12th century doorway.
