What you'll do

Step into a traditional local baker’s home proposing an interactive baking experience with possibility to make and taste local savories, short eats and buns. You will immerse yourself in an educational hands-on bread making workshop, learn about a variety of locally available and rare flours, fire up an ‘old-school’ traditional clay oven and see the workers knead the dough on a large-scale yet home-based bakery operation. Meet the baker’s family and have a refreshing tea/coffee with them while discussing local ways of life.

For many generations, my family has been baking bread the traditional way. We use clay ovens to produce the highest quality baked products, such as malupan (fish bun), kimbula banis (crocodile roll), tea banis (tea puff), rosspan (roasted bread) and others. I will walk you through the baking process and will share with you years of experience growing up in a local baker's home.

The local bakery experience could not have been better. The time just flew by as I enjoyed making local savories and baked goods. I learned about the traditional way of making bread from flours that are only available in Sri Lanka. The family has been baking bread this way for generations and it was wonderful to interact with them while playing with the dough. The bakery is not a big industrial place, its an intimate family owned place, but still i got to mix a big amount of flour and see how they make bread on a daily basis. They use an old clay oven fired by wood. It was nice to taste the same baked products that I learned to make and have a nice cup of tea. Overall, i am very satisfied with this experience.
