What you'll do

First we will learn how to use a map and a compass, so we all feel comfortable finding our way outside the marked trails. In this map there are several positions marked, and like treasure hunters we will use our map and compass to find some of these positions. This is the Swedish national sport - Orienteering.
On our way to these positions we will see blueberries, lingon berries and mushrooms. If they are ripe we can pick and taste. We may also see some wildlife or at least traces of them, like moose and reindeer.
I will teach You about the Swedish unique law of "right of way", why everybody is allowed to pick berries and mushrooms and even go camping in the forests.
When we find a nice and beautiful place we will stop for coffee/tea and cinnamon buns, a typical Swedish "fika". If we feel up to it, we will learn and sing typical Swedish camp songs.
After finishing the walk there will be an opportunity to swim in the lake and to try a Swedish sauna, if you want. At this nature park there is also a restaurant and a café. For those that want there will be an opportunity to try their newly gained skills to make their own way in to the forest, to feel safe and free at the same time

I have lived for more than 50 years in Stockholm. I know the surrounding forests and lakes like my back pocket. For many years I was a scout leader, teaching kids about Swedish nature and survival skills. Today I am competing in orienteering, a sport where you need to find the quickest route in the forest using a map and a compass. These three skills, my knowledge of the Stockholm surroundings, of Swedish nature and of finding my way in the forest with a compass and a map, I will share with You in this nature walk.
In Sweden You have the right to freely walk the forest, swim the lakes, pick berries and mushrooms and even go camping. There are no dangerous animals, only annoying mosquitoes. To truly enjoy this beautiful landscape You need to dare leave the marked trails. So join me into the forest for a few hours of magic beauty.

Where you'll be

This nature tour starts at Hellasgården. This is a nature reserve only 15 minutes from Stockholm city center (buss 401 from Slussen). Apart from our nature tour you can swim (skate) here and there is a public sauna. There is also a restaurant, a café and many nice walking paths. After our nature walk, you have the opportunity to experience this nature reserve on your own with your newly acquired skills.

It was a very unique experience. We had a great time conversing with Martin on our nature walk. He showed us how to orienteer and then let us find our way on the map. The forest and the lakes were beautiful.

We had a wonderful time during this experience. It was a great opportunity to see the beauty of nature in Sweden and was a unique experience, literally off the beaten trail. At the end of experience, my travel buddy and I had made a new friend in one of the other guests and we headed back into the woods to explore on our own, using the knowledge we had gained to further enjoy the experience. If anyone has an inclination towards the outdoors, or is curious about how wild berries and mushrooms taste, I highly recommend this.

Thank you very much for that amazing afternoon. We have been a small group and Martin showed us first how to use a compass before we tried on our own.

Martin is a great leader who is reliable, attentive and friendly. Following him, we found berries, mushrooms, lakes and check points etc. He taught us about the use of compass, reading of map and gave us chances to practice! He even prepared us Fika, so we enjoyed it together by the beautiful lake!! Many thanks, Martin! Nothing worried us because Martin sent us transportation guides the night before. When the bus arrived the meeting venue, Martin was already there at the bus stop! Making us feel like children returning home by school bus, haaa! Therefore we highly recommended others to participate in Martin's activities, for a glimpse of Stockholm's nature from its city's side.

If you want to do some hiking and learn how to navigate nature, this is the class for you. I was very lucky that early Sept there were still many blueberries and lingonberries to pick, which we got to do during our hike. It was nice to take a break by the water. I’d recommend planning more time to hang out and use the sauna and facilities beyond the 3 hour hike and class.

This experience was a great way to get feeling about Swedish nature. Although the area is very close to the city center it is a real nice piece of nature. Martin knows the area very well. He is very informed, smart, kind and flexible. He has planed every minute of this tour. I really enjoyed the experience and highly recommend it to anyone who wants to experience a short safe informative hike during a stay in Stockholm.
