What you'll do

After arriving by taxi (a short ride from the centre) at the meeting point which is at the the 'volunteers fire fighters hut' at the end of the road called Leof. Eth. Antistaseos, Kesaraini, we will start on foot along one of the trails selected based upon your appetite for difficulty. We will initially visit an ancient church after a mild ascent where you will also have great views of Pireus and part of the Athens 'bowl'. We shall then commence along a trail to a nearby shrine with its own story. The route could also include a visit to a fascinating Byzantium monastery, entrance 2euros. From here we continue to a botanical walk which has signposted information on the plants. This trail also offers amazing views of Athens including the Acropolis. Finally, we can either contine to a lodge/cafe for food and drinks or contine further up the mountain for more hiking amongst the trees and more trails.

During the walks I will stop to point out key city landmarks, local flowers, wildlife (seasonal) and give some historical background on the area.

The walks can vary between 1.5 to 3 hrs.

I am a long term resident of Athens, who after years of enjoying trail walks at an adjacent mountain with unrivalled views of Athens and Pireaus, wants to open the experience to others.

Having moved here from London in the 1990s, it was still some time before I discovered this amazing escape to nature accessible from close to central Athens.

I go regularly with friends and know many trails of various lengths and difficulties. The trails include mountain paths, sections through trees with many wild flowers and wildlife (all seasonal) en route.

Arriving at the meeting point by taxi ( which is clearly marked on electronic maps) we met our host, Santha and started up a beautiful path in the forest, We past a fascinating ruined church and then made our way to a Byzantium monastery, this is a Gem nestled among the cypress trees. We followed her along picturesque paths, with stunning views of the city below, and ended up at a hut for a refreshing cold drink. Despite our age, the walk was manageable and unhurried and the route we took lasted about 1.5 hours which was just right for us. We highly recommend this scenic walk with a knowledgeable, friendly host.

This was such a nice trail around the mountain with really beautiful views of Athens, we were lucky enough to come across some tortoises along the way which was great to see. It's always nice to have a break away from the busy city and just be sorrounded by nature, also helped to have a lovely guide with us leading the way as I wouldn't of been able to do it alone. Looking forward to another trail soon. I highly recommend this one.

The taxi driver found the meeting point immediately and we could start our tour promptly. The walk through the hills of Athens gave us very good views down onto the city and super insights into nature as we went. We came into contact with various wild animals (fox, tortoise, birds bees) and despite the (normally) intense heat and hilly terrain the tour was relaxing and sheltered from the sun. Santha knows much about the interesting history of the area and I was very happy I could take part.
