In Japan, we have traditional vegetarian cuisine called Shojin ryori, which is developed at Buddhist temples. Healthy and well-balanced cuisine featuring seasonal vegetables, soybeans including tofu, and nuts. In our class. We make a variety of vegetarian dishes inspired by classic Shojin ryori but with an imaginative and modern twist. These are no meat, fish, egg, milk, honey. I am an editor & writer based in Kyoto and writing about local food, restaurants, traditional food culture in the magazine for over 10 years. I truly realized good aspects of Japanese cuisine behind its culture for more than a thousand years. I also love cooking too, so that I wondered if I promote foreigners to an understanding of Japanese food lot more than Sushi and Ramen.

I have worked for an airline in Hong Kong as a flight attendant after university. It was a valuable experience to learn about different cultures and various kinds of food traveling around the world. While working as a writer, I have been studied cooking since I returning to Japan. Then I started to offer a cooking class for foreigners making use of my experiences.

Learning to cook shojin ryori was really cool, and it tastes delicious. I now have a better understanding of how to cook vegetarian food in Japan. I’m looking forward to trying the recipes out on my own.

Yukari’s class was a beautiful part of our trip to Kyoto. She had prepared a lot of the ingredients before we arrived so we were glad to have a recipe booklet to take away. We learnt a lot about the style of cooking and watched the process with a little bit of hands on cooking, including creating the final plates. Then of course we got to eat the delicious food.
