What you'll do

This 1/2-day trek by bicycle and kayak to little-known and rarely seen natural areas will give you a profound perspective and appreciation for the unique mangrove-and-coral island natural habitat that is inextricably intertwined with the nearshore marine ecosystem of the Florida Keys. The natural and geological landscape has more in common with the islands of the Bahamas than anywhere on the U.S. mainland. After picking up groceries and drinks at a local shopping center in Key West, we will drive twenty minutes east to the westernmost point of Sugarloaf Key where there is a little-known bicycle trail that winds three miles through a protected wildlife and conservation area. At the turn-around, we will stop at a hidden swimming hole sheltered in the shade of surrounding mangrove trees. It's a three-mile return bike ride back to the trail-head, and then lunch at a serene picnic area on the ocean. After lunch we will put the kayaks in for an exhilirating expedition through untouched lush mangrove channels flowing between sea and sound.

Mike

For 35 years I have been connecting travelers and visitors with the natural wonders and unique character of place. I have led sightseeing tours in Miami Florida, archaeological trips to Mexico, geological expeditions in California, and sailing adventures to Cuba. As a kayaker, sailor, scuba-diver and long-distance swimmer I have explored the nearshore and outer islands of the Florida Keys extensively, and I am intimately familiar with the natural mangrove habitat of the islands that are inextricably intertwined with the coral and marine ecosystem. I have lived in the Florida Keys for twenty-three years, and I have hosted more than a thousand guests on my Airbnb Keys houseboat listing.
