My wife and I had a private tour with Héctor. He picked us up in an air-conditioned van. We were interested in seeing a nearby village, as well as some of the city. He asked what kinds of artisans we wanted to see, so he could customize the tour for us. We let him choose, so he took us to see—and talk with as they were working—a (blind) sculptor and a weaver. We also met other artists, including a man who composes a poem with each painting—he read us one of his poems. We were not interested in buying, and there was no pressure to do so. We visited at least 3 villages. It happened to be Martes de Carnaval (Mardi Gras): in one village we came upon a local parade—quite impressive (but don’t count on that for your visit!). We also made short visits to 2 museums.
Héctor shared his extensive knowledge of local culture and history. He and Marisela are new to AirBNB, but they have many years of experience, including organizing study-abroad programs for U.S. university students in Oaxaca.
