About your host

An American living my dreams in Africa, I have years of experience as a singer, actress and writer in Africa. My husband Douglas, born and raised in Nairobi, is a matatu expert and will be your guide.

What we’ll do

We'll travel together to the workshop where matatus are born. Interact with the artists, designers, fabricators, and engineers responsible for the construction and outfitting of these quirky mini-vans. Next we climb aboard an operational matatu for a 90-minute voyage before lunch, where a driver or conductor will provide more insights. Enjoy a complimentary copy of my matatu culture documentary.

What else you should know

Expect to share what Kenyans experience every day on a matatu ride that is full of adrenaline, loud music, and ordinary passengers. Avoid carrying expensive gadgets and bulky handbags. Just like any trip on public transport through a busy African city, you'll need to dress comfortably and modestly, avoid taking valuables, and be alert. We'll be in a group so if we stick together and you listen to your host then there's no reason you should have a problem.
