What you'll do
Starting by the statue of the one king to face execution by the axe, we will head through the ceremonial arch at the end of the world famous Mall, iconic red processional route to Buckingham Palace. You'll hear about all the ceremonies which have occurred here, and a few personal anecdotes about the royal family. Then we'll move over to the parade ground which will host the extraordinary Change of the Lifeguard ceremony, an event which has been occurring for over 350 years! Let me explain the history, tradition and uniforms of the horseguards, while ensuring you are in the best position to view the ceremony. Making our way through the most beautiful St James Park you may spot squirrels, swans and pelicans! No longer deer though, which would disappoint King Henry VIII, whose palace of St James is across the road. We'll see where he lived, and en route will catch the very end of the changing guard ceremony as the footguards leave Buckingham Palace and march down the Mall. Again, amazing photos of these famous guards as they pass. We'll finish the tour with a view of Buckingham Palace, secretly glad we didn't spend the past two hours crushed in the melee of tourists at the gates!
Hi there, I'm Matt, a tour guide lecturer with the best job in the world of guiding people around this amazing city! I am a qualified City of London and City of Westminster guide, and have designed and led tours for the best part of a decade. However, hopefully what makes my tours unique is that each of them focuses on the most unusual aspects of the city, bringing to life old stories, forgotten buildings, lost plans and hidden oddities. So if you're looking for something a bit different to your typical tour of London, join me on one of my walks around London!
