What we’ll do

Meet at Old Lodge Coffee House and do some introductions and safety brief. Walk down the glen. The initial focus will be on natural processes in the river and the alterations to allow the river to be used as a source of water power. Stop at the walled garden area to think about the challenges of working to build on a steep slope and discuss the role of horses used to remove timber during the…

What else you should know

The walk itself is on quite flat ground on paths. Some of the paths can be quite muddy. It is possible to bring wheelchairs or prams. There is no climbing rocks involved. Toilets in coffee shop.

What I’ll provide

Equipment
Handouts about the glen and its geology and that of the surrounding hills.

What to bring

Waterproofs
Sturdy footwear (sneakers or trainers are fine)
Food and water to last a couple of hours
Any medications they need

Where you'll be

The whole experience is set in Blackford Glen, one of the ancient glacial meltwater channels in the landscape of Edinburgh. The river channel is our constant companion. Hermitage of Braid is a typical 19th century Scottish estate house, constructed from local stone, with outlying walled garden, stables and an ice house. Agassiz's Rock and Blackford Quarry are superb exposures of the rocks that make up the hills on either side of the glen.

Keep these in mind
