About your host

I'm a trained architect and urbanist with over a decade of experience working and living in Boston. In my career, I've probably done almost every job you can do that has to do with buildings: architecture, interior design, property management, planning, even fixed a toilet or two. I've spoken at the Brookings Institution and at many conferences, including the national American Institute of…

What we’ll do

Buildings are DRAMATIC. Okay, they might look sort of quiet and serious on the outside, but those orderly bricks conceal a whole world of human messiness. I love telling stories about buildings, letting people in on the crazy stories, tricky policies, feuds, backstabbing, and overall reality-TV-worthy world of making and operating buildings. We'll ask questions about power, politics, money, and…

What else you should know

We'll end our tour in early afternoon in the Seaport, and I'm happy to provide recommendations for food, museums, parks, shopping...anything you need!

What I’ll provide

Snacks
I'll buy you a yummy coffee at the beginning of the tour!

What to bring

Wear comfortable footwear, and check the weather--Boston can be unpredictable, and we'll be walking outside!
Doesn't hurt to bring a bottle of water to stay hydrated as we walk.
Definitely bring a camera, and maybe even a sketchbook or notebook if you're like me and you like to document nerdy notes and stories.

Where you'll be

We'll tour the Fort Point + Seaport neighborhoods. This area has some crazy history: originally a railyard, then an abandoned wasteland known for crime, then empty buildings full of artist squatters, who fought developers building luxury condos once the wildly over-budget Big Dig was completed. Today it's gorgeous, full of expensive coffee and galleries, but you'll hear all the drama of how it developed--and the conflicts that continue to arise.
