About your host

I'm a long-time Nairobi resident of 12 1/2 years who knows the ins and outs of this colorful and vibrant city. My favorite go-to place where I shop and bring friends and guests is Toi Market. I'm not referring to the tourist trap portion but the area where the Kenyan masses shop for food like vegetables, grains, fruit and pulses as well as for secondhand items such as clothes, shoes, and…

What we’ll do

We'll meet at Adlife Plaza at 1:30 pm for a short orientation about where we're going, what to expect and what to do. We'll then take a matatu (local public transportation van) to Toi Market where we will dive right into the hustle and bustle of a thriving and busy market. We will pass stalls upon stalls selling all manner of secondhand clothes, shoes, vegetables, fruit, and whatnot. We will head…

What else you should know

Dress simply and wear comfortable shoes since Toi Market has unpaved uneven narrow alleys. It may get crowded. Be respectful and ask permission before taking pictures. Make friends with the locals!

What I’ll provide

Transportation
We will take a matatu from Yaya Centre to Toi Market and a bus on the way back for which I will pay. Taxis, are yours to pay.

What to bring

Wear sunscreen and a hat, bring water, and your mobile phone for pictures or videos. Keep an open mind and have a healthy respect for other people's lives and cultures.
Of course, we encourage you to support the hardworking local sellers so bring along some shillings to buy fruit, veggies or clothes or souvenirs.

Where you'll be

Toi Market has many sections and it's easy to get lost in the labyrinth. There are sections especially the more touristy accessible area where sellers are quite aggressive. The inner section that straddles Kibra is where the locals actually shop. Kibra aka Kibera is the largest slum in Nairobi (and also the largest urban slum in Africa) and is home to around 1 million residents.
