What you'll do
Aloha, this experience will begin with me meeting you across the street from the famous Ted's Bakery on Kamehameha Highway where parking is available. Please park across the street makai side (oceanside). There is a bus stop for those who do not have a car. We will then walk to my house a block from the beach. On the walk I will point out the different flowers that are used in lei making, explain the area and the famous surf breaks, Sunset, Backyards, V-land etc. The experience is split into two parts, hula & lei making. Our hula lesson starts with flowers in the hair and picking out a pa'u to wear (hula skirt). I then teach three basic dance steps, ka'o, hela, and kaholo. We will then practice these steps with hula implements: uli uli, puili, and the ipu. Finally we combine all of the steps to music. The second half of the class we will make a flower lei with flowers from my yard. At the end of the experience you have a beautiful lei to wear and have learned basic hula steps.
Aloha. I have been studying and dancing Hawaiian hula (both Auana & Kahiko), Tahitian, and Samoan for over 15 years on the North Shore of Oahu. My three daughters began dancing at 5 years old and we all perform around the island; Waimea Valley, Turtle Bay Resort, private events, and other numerous locations. We are responsible for creating all of our own ornaments. I create all different types of lei, ti leaf skirts, Tahitian hip hei, etc. I look forward to sharing my love and knowledge of Polynesian dance and Hawaiian culture with you.
traditional hula pau/skirt and all hula implements will be provided. Ipu, uli uli, pu ili's etc. all lei making supplies
