My husband and I did the longer and more intensive hike up Mt. Etna. Our guide, Federico, met us in Siracusa and he drove us up to the mountain where I was able to rent hiking boots that fit perfectly. Federico was such an amazing guide for us. We appreciated his attention to driving and hiking safely, as well as adjusting to our level of comfort with pacing the hike. This hike is certainly for folks who get moderate to intensive activity regularly. My husband and I both workout regularly and I was winded by the time we reached our mid-point! Federico shared a wealth of knowledge with us around the formation and activity of Etna, as well as how locals of the region relate to and manage her many “moods”, in addition to cultivating the land surrounding her. The views were absolutely breathtaking. After our vigorous hike (where going down the mountain was my absolute favorite part), and high fives all around that I didn’t manage to tumble into a crater, we went to a local restaurant and shop where we were able to taste a myriad of foods/wines that highlighted the unique quality of the soil created by the eruptions of Mt. Etna. Overall it was such a cool experience. We had a blast and greatly appreciate the time, energy, patience and knowledge Federico showed us. We would 100% recommend this hike to others who are looking to have a little adventure on their trip to lovely Sicily.
