What you'll do
Learn about San Francisco’s Chinatown through its famous cuisine and cultures. I’ll give you an overview of the city’s rich Chinese history and the unique cultures. We’ll head to one of my favorite destinations, a factory where you can make your own fortune cookies. And as we wander through lively streets and grocery store aisles, we’ll discuss the produce and ingredients most sought after for Chinese cuisine. Optionally, we can go to one of my favorite dim sum houses (cost about $18 per person separately). You’ll leave with a better understanding of the people and flavors that make up this iconic neighborhood, the oldest Chinatown in the U.S. and the biggest Chinese enclave outside of China.
I’m from Taishan, China, where more than half of the early Chinese immigrants to the U.S. came from. My great grandfathers were among the immigrants that contributed to the development of gold mines, railroads, and businesses in the SF bay area. I’m excited to share my culinary and sociological perspective on Chinatown with you. I also speak Cantonese, Mandarin, Taishanese, & Japanese.
