What you'll do

Does even the thought of waiting in line to enter JTNP incite a migraine? Get off the beaten park path and join me on a casual hike through a stunningly quiet and vista-rich section of Pipes Canyon. On this 1.5 hour journey, we'll stop to identify some of the potent medicinal, edible, or otherwise useful plants that have—and continue to be—cultural cornerstones for the Cahuilla people and other native tribes from this region. And maybe we'll even figure out which plants will remedy that headache. Before we head out on our 1.5-mile hike, we'll go over backcountry basics and ethics of wildcrafting (the art of gathering and using wild plants.) The desert is a sensitive ecosystem, and it's important that we're all aware of best practices while out in the field. We'll drive about a mile in my car to the trailhead (or caravan in two cars if needed.) We'll walk on a dirt trail between two buttes (features of the Sand to Snow National Monument), where we'll make frequent stops to learn about medicinal and edible plants that grow in this area. The trail winds into a massive boulder field, and we'll find a nice perch for a break and to take in the view before heading back.

Sarah

As a nature-loving chef with an insatiable curiosity, I've spent the past few years researching edible and medicinal flora of the Mojave desert and surrounding regions, and the Native American traditions that have given us this knowledge. In 2016, I founded High Desert Test Kitchen, a community-driven educational project that brought people together to share food prepared with native ingredients. This past year, I started Hole in the Sand, my platform for wild-food events and dinners. I'm excited to introduce you to some of my favorite species from this incredibly diverse and resilient biome!

Where you'll be

This plant identification walk meanders through a secluded, seldom-visited parcel of public land that was designated the Sand to Snow National Monument by former President Barack Obama in 2015. We'll get to see the Black Lava Butte up close, and Pipes Canyon from afar. Tucked away from the crowds of the national park and out of earshot of major roadways, this sacred place provides trekkers a pure and pristine desert experience. Boulders included!
