What you'll do

Gather ingredients to make a lunch

I'm excited to take my guests to one of “Shibuya style” supermarkets. I show you and explain seasonal produces, Japanese seasonings, and pantry items in Japanese kitchen. From this part of experience, I'd like my guests to discover what Japanese eat everyday, and the fundamental ingredients of Japanese cuisine. And more, I hope that from this experience of visiting a market with me is a chance to see how Japanese food market is presenting products, how Tokyo locals shop, and “food culture” behind the products. After visiting the market, we move to my cooking studio by taking a train two stops from Shibuya or walk depending on weather. Class menu changes slightly with seasonal vegetables, but the menu in this experience is always Japanese home cooking 101. I want my guests to learn where is “umami” comes from and how to create it. And, recipes are very simple to cook and ingredients can be found in your city so that you can recreate the class menu easily for your friends and family. Menu is Karaage, corn rice, miso soup, three other side dishes. My goal for this cooking class is my guests will be able to cook delicious miso soup in their kitchen after my class! Class menu is not created for vegetarian, but can be accommodated as much as I can. BUT, smoked bonito is always used in broth in this class. I also offer “Ramen at Home” and “Vegetarian Ramen and Gyoza” class.

It’s unfortunate that travel is low during this time, but it offered us a rare opportunity to essentially have a private lesson. We were the only two in the class and I really enjoyed the intimacy of the experience. Yukari is a delightful, bright, and genuinely passionate teacher of her craft. We connected in our love for food and cooking and I felt a great insight of Japanese culture. She is just an absolute joy to be around! My only hope is that she continues to teach these classes and next time we come back to japan we can take a new course with her!

My experience with Yukari was absolutely wonderful and I can’t recommend her enough! We had to alter the schedule a bit of the market to meal class due to some closures in Tokyo, so I met her directly at the cooking studio, which was conveniently located and wonderfully equipped. The menu she selected for our Market to Meal class was delicious and she was thoughtful in explaining the ingredients and kitchen equipment. After we cooked and ate, we headed to the market and it was fantastic having a local show us around the market and explain the different produce, fish, meat, desserts, and other foods to us. Yukari is warm, friendly, and was a pleasure to spend the day with. I definitely want to book another class with her next time we are in Tokyo!

Yukari is an excellent and knowledgeable host, who can take you through a wonderful experience of Japanese cuisine and culture. We enjoyed some delicious food and had a personalised tour of a bustling Japanese food market, which was a fantastic experience.

Yukari was an amazing host and my partner and I really enjoyed the whole experience. We learnt so much about traditional Japanese cooking and left wanting to try our new found skills back home. We would definitely recommend this experience as a must-do if you're in Tokyo or staying near by!

This was an amazing class! I can't recommend this more, whether you are an experienced cook, or just trying to get your feet wet. Yukari made us feel so welcome, and we discussed much about her and our personal lives. We learned so much during this class, especially her understanding of substitutes (we live in an area where there is not a significant Japanese presence) so that we can work to achieve the same effect with different ingredients. In addition, her tips about understanding cooking from all senses, like knowing when chicken is done by the sound of the oil, were particularly valuable.
