What you'll do

We will meet at our cottage near the sea under a tree in our back garden. Here you will be entertained by a musical story performance showing how the original Southern African instruments were discovered and how the music evolved as people migrated to become the musical styles we know today. From tribal to jazz, blues and back to township jives. After tea and a snack, participants will have an opportunity to make their own version of an ancient African wind instrument (ixilongo) decorate it and learn to play it. This will be your take home souviner. You will be invited to share in an interactive musical jam session. All the participants will be given a chance to play a simple instrument and guided in playing music together in a polyrhythmic ensemble. Beat by beat we break boundaries and find a sense of belonging in the rhythm of the drum. This is a great opportunity to release stress, find your centre and discover your groove within the whole. You will be taught skills and techniques and be accompanied by strong professional drummers who will help you hold your part.
