What you'll do

The Alpaca Experience, for those 12 years old and up, includes learning all about alpacas, their origin, use, biology & behavior as well as a trek around the farm while leading your own alpaca "buddy"! We start in the Tuscan inspired barn, housing our horses and friendly giant donkey, Jack. A short talk about Alpacas, incl. their care and handling, will help you become "Alpaca Experts"! Next we assign each person an alpaca and begin our trek. The trail starts across a bridge, up a wooded ravine and then along a fence adjacent to a 2,000 acre cattle ranch where you will see beautiful vistas of the surrounding hills and mountains of Carmel Valley. We stop under a large oak trea for refreshments and interact with the alpacas. Continuing on the trail we go down to the pastures, passing horses, alpacas, goats and more stunning views of Carmel Valley. There will be ample opportunities to engage with your furry friends and take photos of the landscape as well as the alpacas.
Other things to note: the Alpaca Trek is not suitable for children under 12.
Must be able to physically walk/hike up a moderately sloped trail while leading 150+ pound alpaca. Wear proper shoes for hiking. Running shoes/sneakers are ok. We will still go on the trek if there is light rain-so if this is the forecast bring umbrellas/ponchos. Be sure to bring your camera or smartphone to take lots of ph

Bonnie and Michael, both veterinarians, moved to L. A. in 1991. After a trip along scenic CA HWY 1, a fantasy to retire to a farm on the beautiful central coast transpired. We sold our veterinary practices in L.A. and in 2015 we moved to D'Jango Hill Farm, named after our rescue dog. The farm is home to a menagerie of animals, many of them rescues: a herd of alpacas, several horses, a mammoth donkey, giant tortoises, chickens, goats, pigs and a handsome ram rescued as a baby from a livestock auction, as well as a few dogs and cats! Bonnie is eager to share her hobby and passion for these adorable, quirky camelids. From yearly shearing, toenail trims, breeding and raising "crias" (baby alpacas), she has come to cherish her time with these incredible animals. We are eager to share our experience so you too can fall in love with alpacas!

Where you'll be

D'Jango Hill Farm is a unique combination of rescued animals (pigs, tortoises, dogs, cats, sheep, goats) as well as horses, chickens and a donkey nestled in the surrounding hills, mountains and valley. The barn where we meet the alpacas is a beautiful Tuscan inspired building (frequently mistaken for a house!). As you lead your furry alpaca friends on our farm trail, you will pass through a wooded ravine and emerge to stunning vistas.

Alpacas are amazing animals. I was filled with joy walking with my alpaca buddy and feeding them veggies and grain. The location in the valley is beautiful. Highly recommend if you are a animal lover!

This experience is a must-do! Bonnie explained to us all about Alpacas first and then took us to the trek with our individual alpacas. This was very informative and we were able to fully appreciate the way of Alpacas and know so many fun facts. The interactions with the Alpacas were the best and Bonnie and Mark guided us all the way through it. I had too much fun and in love with Alpacas now. I will definitely plan to visit them and see Carmela again :)

An exceptional experience! Stunning location in beautiful Carmel Valley. The experience includes an interesting cliff-notes-like education on alpacas which really enhances the interactive experience. I loved the first date/second date analogy Bonnie taught us when interacting with the alpacas. Fabulous!
